SuperValu and Centra retailers leading the way in sustainability with 9% reduction in carbon in 12 months

SuperValu and Centra retailers have achieved a 9% carbon reduction, a year on from the launch of the €25m Musgrave Sustainability Fund. SuperValu and Centra set out to achieve a 12% carbon reduction by end of 2023.

In June last year, Musgrave announced the first of its kind €25 million sustainability fund aimed at realising this target and reducing emissions across its operations, ultimately to achieve net zero by 2040. In order to reduce emissions to net zero by 2040, Musgrave is aiming to achieve a 46% reduction in carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030.

So far, the carbon reduction achieved across SuperValu and Centra stores is equivalent to planting over 260,000 trees. By the end of 2023, over 26,500 panels will be installed across 63 SuperValu and 36 Centra stores generating the equivalent amount of electricity to power almost 3,500 homes entirely for a year. More than 90 SuperValu stores will have solar panels by the end of 2025.

€27.7m has been invested to date, made up of the fund combined with SuperValu and Centra retailer investment. It is expected the total SuperValu and Centra retailer investment across the whole of Ireland to be approximately €50 million once the fund is complete.

Ian Allen, Managing Director of SuperValu and Centra: “Our stores are at the heart of communities around Ireland, and we are proud that our network of SuperValu and Centra retailers we are on track to reach our carbon reduction goal by the end of this year.  Our retailers have shown real passion and enthusiasm to continue to lead by example and implement sustainability measures across their leading supermarket and convenience stores. Over the month of June some retailers saw 30% or more of the electricity they used come from solar panels they installed on their roofs, this is sustainability in action. We are on track and are seeing constant efficiencies and improvements being made across our retail network.  Consumers want us to do more, and we are focused on doing this and working with our retail partners to make every community a sustainable community. We want to make a real-lasting legacy for generations to come.”

Cormac Quish of Quish’s SuperValu Tramore said: At SuperValu Tramore, we are acutely aware of the responsibility that rests with all of us in relation to climate action, both individually and collectively. The changes we have made in store as a result of our store revamp and the sustainability fund investment have allowed us to achieve a 59% carbon reduction and 40% reduction in electricity. For example, we have installed 348 solar panels, removed oil ovens and replaced with electric and introduced new refrigeration with all doors running on environmentally friendly gas. We look forward to building on these actions and making every day real sustainable action accessible for our loyal customers. As a community hub, we are committed to reaching Net Zero by 2040 and we will continue to enhance sustainability measures across our store to play our part.”

The current 9% reduction in carbon emissions puts us in good stead to achieve a 46% reduction by 2030. SuperValu and Centra’s role as Irish Government UN Sustainable Goals Champions (2023-2024) means we are committed to making every community a sustainable one and as a business that feeds one in three people every day, we are passionate about continuing this journey and stepping up to the plate to support our customers and suppliers.

In the Republic of Ireland, Musgrave committed €50,000 per SuperValu store and €25,000 per Centra store. Stores across Ireland have implemented select sustainability initiatives based on each store’s needs and set-up, including upgrading freezers and refrigeration units, LED lighting retrofit, solar panels, and electronic shelf edge labels (eSEL).

SuperValu teams up with David Gough & Hannah Looney to launch new ‘Wear with Pride’ laces initiative for Pride 2023

SuperValu has today teamed up with GAA Referee and LGBTQ+ advocate David Gough and Cork Ladies footballer Hannah Looney to launch SuperValu’s ‘Wear with Pride’ Laces campaign for Pride month 2023. As part of the initiative, rainbow laces will be available to purchase in SuperValu stores nationwide for the month of June, with proceeds going to support Belong To, LGBTQ+ Youth Ireland.

Earlier this year, SuperValu launched the third year of their #CommunityIncludesEveryone campaign, as part of their sponsorship of the GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, with a host of Gaelic Games role models from across the country rallying together to promote the importance of diversity and inclusion in Gaelic games, including David Clifford, Padraig O’Hora, Maggie Farrelly and Ikem Ugwueru.

As part of their #CommunityIncludesEveryone campaign, this June SuperValu is building on their previous work with leading GAA Referee and LGBTQ+ advocate David Gough as he and Cork Ladies footballer Hannah Looney team up to lead the ‘Wear with Pride’ Laces campaign. With the launch of this new campaign, SuperValu and its team of ambassadors hope to encourage Ireland’s Gaelic Games community to wear their rainbow laces with pride and show their support for the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland.

With the support of the Gaelic Players Association,  the  ‘Wear with Pride’ Laces campaign will also see all inter-county players gifted with SuperValu’s rainbow laces throughout the month of June.

SuperValu’s pride laces are Irish-made by Atlantic Weave Limited, a Donegal-based company.

Belong To, CEO Moninne Griffith (she/her) said:  “Pride is about inclusivity, self-acceptance and community – just like sports. Research tells us that many LGBTQ+ young people can feel excluded from sports and there is still work to do to ensure that sport is inclusive to everyone. We are proud to join Supervalu for ‘Wear with Pride’ and be part of this campaign to bring visibility and LGBTQ+ inclusion on and off the pitch. By wearing rainbow laces, you can send a strong message to the LGBTQ+ community, saying ‘you are welcome here!’”

Gemma Begley, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Manager for the Gaelic Players’ Association said: “At the Gaelic Players’ Association, we are thrilled to offer our support to SuperValu’s ‘Wear with Pride’ Laces campaign, this June. For the first time ever, inter-county players up and down the country will be gifted with SuperValu’s rainbow laces via a player representative in their squad. We hope that this activity will help promote the ideals of #CommunityIncludesEveryone and that members of the LGBTQ+ community in Gaelic Games will feel our support for them at a widespread level.”

GAA referee and LGBTQ+ advocate, David Gough, commented: It is with great pride that I team up with SuperValu again for 2023’s Pride month. Within Gaelic Games, we know that while positive strides have been made, there is still much to do to ensure everyone is included within our communities. A campaign like ‘Wear with Pride’ goes a long way to offering visible support to members of the LGBTQ+ community within Gaelic Games and across the country. I would encourage everyone to lace up this Pride month and show their support.”

Cork Ladies footballer and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Hannah Looney, added: “I am delighted to be involved in and supporting SuperValu’s ‘Wear with Pride’ Laces campaign. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I know just how impactful people’s support can be. My teammates and I are looking forward to showing our support for the LGBTQ+ community in Gaelic Games and encourage everyone to get involved this Pride month.”

SuperValu and Centra Northern Ireland on track to plant 50,000 trees by 2032

Northern Ireland groups benefit from Musgrave NI sustainability initiative

Leading convenience retail brands, SuperValu and Centra part of Musgrave NI, have planted another 5,000 native trees across Northern Ireland this year, bringing them a step closer to their goal of planting 50,000 trees by 2032.

In partnership with Trees on the Land, a charity and not-for-profit project from the Green Economy Foundation, the initiative launched last year and saw 5,000 trees planted across 13 locations in Northern Ireland, while this year a further 5,000 have been planted in 17 locations.

Groups to have received trees this year include Enniskillen Integrated Primary School, Armoy Community Association, Colin Wildlife Group in Dunmurry, Strathroy Community Garden & Shed in Omagh, and St Colum’s Primary School in Portstewart.

Colleagues from SuperValu and Centra stores across Northern Ireland supported the initiative by pulling on their wellies and visiting many of the tree planting locations.

Desi Derby, Director of Marketing for SuperValu and Centra, said:

“This project is extremely important to us all at SuperValu and Centra. We are committed to doing all we can to help the environment and become a more sustainable business and tree planting is just one of the many ways we are giving back to the environment.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Trees on the Land once again to plant a further 5,000 trees, helping to absorb more carbon dioxide, improve air quality and enhance biodiversity across Northern Ireland.”

Imogen Rabone, Project Co-ordinator and Founder of Trees on the Land, added: “This is now our second year working with Musgrave NI and we are delighted to have them on board with such an amazing project. We had an extremely successful year last year planting 5,000 trees across 13 locations, and have distributed another 5,000 trees this year across 17 locations.

“Our vision at Trees on the Land is to establish tree cover and woodland in rural and urban areas that will grow for many years and provide valuable resources for future generations. It is thanks to partnerships like this with Musgrave NI that makes this possible.”

A commitment to planting 50,000 trees is one in a list of steps being taken by SuperValu and Centra to make their stores and communities more sustainable.

“We all have a responsibility to care for the environment and we believe small changes can make a big impact. Together with our customers, we can build a more sustainable future by helping to look after the planet we all share,” Desi said.
