Daybreak opens new store in Eyre Square

We are happy to announce the opening of Jason Henchy’s new Daybreak store on Eyre Square, Galway City.  

The new 1,100 sq ft store officially opened on the 25 November and brings the total number of Daybreak stores in Co. Galway to eleven.

The store is located in the heart of Eyre Square and the opening hours reflect the strong demand for a high quality convenience store offering.

The store offers a very strong value for money proposition, great coffee to go and customers can avail of the new Daybreak deli euro offers to name but a few.

The store employs 12 full and part time staff.

Londis celebrates 100th store development this year

Londis retailers are investing more in their stores, with spend on refits up 12 per cent since the start of the year as Londis drives down the cost of store developments by 15 per cent over the last 18 months. So far this year Londis has completed 100 development projects with retailers investing a total of £4.3 million in refits.  Around 45 per cent of this spend is on new refrigeration equipment.  
The 100th development was completed at Anne and Mark Trinder’s store in Stone, Staffordshire. They invested £85,000 to redevelop their store, where a major part of the investment was in energy efficient equipment, including new chillers for fresh produce, dairy, soft drinks and alcohol. Since the refit, chilled fresh food sales are up 20 per cent.   
Says Paul Courtney, Londis Sales Director: “There’s been a strong focus on quality refits, with a marked increase in spend on best in class chilled equipment with the growing importance of fresh food to Londis retailers. Energy efficiency is key, with many of our retail partners benefitting from loans from the Carbon Trust.

Musgrave Group Energy Management Team won Energy Manager of the Year Award – Major Users at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland Energy awards 2010

The team, under the direction of John Curran, Group Environmental Executive, is led by Brian Scannell, Musgrave Energy Manager, who works closely with nominated Energy Champions in each of our Cash & Carry and Distribution facilities, with the aim of reducing energy consumption and optimising energy use across the group. This is done through continuous analysis and reporting of energy usage against set targets, based on the previous year’s consumption and the 2007 baseline.

Our energy reduction targets form part of our overall sustainability programme and are based on the philosophy of continuous improvement; targeting 5 per cent reduction in energy use per year. (i.e. target for 2010 is a 15 per cent reduction compared to the 2007 baseline).

Since 2008, over 65 energy projects have been implemented across the Group, resulting in over 3,000MWh in energy savings, with some facilities already exceeding their energy targets for 2012.

These results have been achieved through the implementation of a web based energy monitoring and targeting system, staff energy awareness training, analysis of utility invoices to ensure optimum tariff structures are maintained, trials of new energy efficient technology as it emerges, and a commitment to use best in class energy efficiency products (Triple E – Excellence in Energy Efficiency).

The judges were particularly impressed with the breadth and depth of the Musgrave Group energy management programme and the way in which the energy works together to deliver change. The also noted how energy data is made visible and responsibilities in delivering reduction targets clearly defined, demonstrating a clear energy management culture across the organisation. The judges also identified the great replication potential of our approach among other multi-site companies.

Thornton’s Budgens scoops London Green Business of the Year Award

Congratulations to Thornton’s Budgens who won the ‘Green Business of the Year’ award at last night’s London Business Awards 2010, an awards ceremony that covers businesses from all sectors across the whole of London.

Judges were impressed with the way that the company linked green initiatives with another of its key values, community work.

Board changes at Musgrave Group

Musgrave Group today announced changes in Group Board responsibilities effective 22 November 2010. These changes reflect Musgrave’s strategy to emerge stronger from recession and exploit synergies across the Group that will position the company for renewed growth in 2011.

Despite the recession in Ireland with significant food deflation and a challenging trading environment in our other markets, Musgrave’s strategy has ensured that the business and its retail partners have successfully responded to changing consumer requirements and tough economic conditions. This strategy has delivered in line with plan and ensures that the Group has in place the platform for future growth.  

To further enhance the growth potential of its unique business model, the changes to Musgrave’s Group Board responsibilities are as follows:

  • Donal Horgan, currently Managing Director of SuperValu and Centra in the Republic of Ireland has been named as Managing Director of Budgens and Londis based in Great Britain.
  • Martin Kelleher, currently Managing Director of Musgrave Wholesale Partners becomes Managing Director of SuperValu and Centra in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Noel Keeley, currently Group Human Resources Director, takes up the position of Managing Director for Musgrave Wholesale Partners.
  • Separately, Sharon Buckley, Group Commercial Director, will assume the additional responsibility for Supply Chain across the Group.
  • Tim Kenny, Group Finance Director will assume the additional responsibility of Business Development across the Group.
  • Martin Hyson is retiring from the main board of Musgrave but remains as a member of the Executive Management Team to lead the growth agenda in Spain.

Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland and The Logic Group win award for customer loyalty programme

Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland The Logic Group have been commended by the Retail Systems’ ‘Back Office Solution of the Year Award’ for their work and development of the ‘Real Rewards Customer Loyalty Solution.’ The loyalty programme was carried out in association with MRPI’s SuperValu brand holding over 190 franchised stores across Ireland.

Retail Systems’ judges assessed how the technology integrated with current operations and looked at the benefits provided to MRPI business by a solution that replaced various paper-based loyalty initiatives operating in a number of SuperValu stores with a unified programme; innovation was also taken into account and five other brands made it onto the shortlist.

Scott Thompson, editor of Retail Systems comments: “Congratulations to The Logic Group and Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland (MRPI) for their win in the Back Office Solution of the Year category. This was a particularly tough category to judge, with a number of strong entries, but the judging panel opted for what they all agreed was an innovative project which has successfully provided an automated replacement to the retailer’s paper-based programme.

The robust service provided by The Logic Group through its sophisticated and feature rich product – ‘System for Loyalty Administration and Management’ (SLAM) – enabled the back-end solution to integrate with the MRPI’s Point of Sale function so that members of the loyalty programme can earn and redeem points for multiple concurrent offers, facilitating the separation and management of national brand initiatives and local promotions. Retailers within the group are also provided with controlled web access to the back-end platform for ‘self-serve’ customer service and programme configuration.

The award ceremony took place in The Grosvenor Hotel, London on Thursday 28 October and was hosted by Declan Curry, presenter of BBC2’s Working Lunch. The Retail Systems Awards look to recognise excellence and innovation in the field of information technology within the UK retail sector. Award winning Londis to feature in new series on BBC One

Sunder and Pam Sandher, who own an award winning Londis store in Leamington Spa, are to feature in a new six-part series, being screened on BBC One called ‘Turn Back Time’.  The series brings the story of the British High Street to life as it transports four empty shops and a group of contemporary shop-keeping families back to the High Street’s heyday in the 1870s, before propelling them through a century of change right up to the seventies.

The couple, who are joined by their children Karina (16) and Josh (12), will be featured in episode six on 7 December as convenience store owners in the seventies.

Sunder and Pam were ideal for the part as they had helped their first generation immigrant families at work and in the home in the seventies. They wanted to take their children back to that decade to see how they coped without modern technology and to show them the difficulties faced by their forebears when they arrived in Britain for the first time.

Says Sunder: “The High Street is an essential part of the community. Being part of this series was a great experience for us all. Along with the usual pressures of running a business, during the filming we experienced the problems of dealing with pounds, shillings and pence; powercuts; no EPoS or mobiles. Throughout the filming we truly lived as if we were in the seventies, from our clothing and food, through to the flat we were living in and the car we drove. It was tough, but when it was all over we were really sad to leave.”

The series is set in the picturesque market town in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and overseen by Turn Back Time’s own unique chamber of commerce (Gregg Wallace, Tom Herbert and Juliet Gardiner) that sets the challenges for each era.

Musgrave Retail Partner NI’s life-saving £1.5 million

TV presenter and Action Cancer patron Zoe Salmon helps celebrate the support that Musgrave Retail Partners NI gives to the Northern Ireland charity, as she shares the news that donations to Action Cancer from Musgrave central office staff in Belfast and its independent SuperValu and Centra retail partners have reached the £1.5 million mark.

The financial contribution is believed to be one of the largest ever made to a Northern Ireland charity by a local company.  The partnership between the two organisations has also had a significant impact on the people of Northern Ireland. In 2006 SuperValu helped Action Cancer pay for and launch a state-of-the-art mobile screening and health promotion unit – the Big Bus – and since then 20,000 people have used the life-saving service.

Centra’s support of the charity’s Health Action programme has helped educate 300,000 young people in healthy lifestyles, aiming to reduce their cancer risk in later life. This month sees the start of Musgrave’s tenth year of partnership with Action Cancer and a year-long series of events is planned to mark the anniversary.
