Caring for the planet
Today our planet is facing a Climate Emergency, we need to radically reduce our impacts, and act with a sense of urgency if we are to reverse the damage already done. At Musgrave we are committed to becoming net zero carbon by 2040. This target gives us a long-term focus on systematic and consistent improvements across our business and brands to reduce emissions. For example, we have already reduced our fleet emissions by more than 30% (between 2006-2020), despite the business growing significantly, and we power all our Group buildings with Green Energy. Reducing our emissions to net zero by 2040 will involve at least a 46% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, to achieve the goal.
Plastic remains a problem, which is as much about packaging changes as it is changing consumer behaviour. Our strategy is to eliminate non-recyclable packaging across in-store and own brand products, and where we have to use packaging to preserve food to minimise food waste it will be recyclable, reusable or compostable – this has already been achieved in more than 90% of own brand products in SuperValu and Centra. In addition, with our retailers, we will encourage customers to make more sustainable choices and consider the manner in which they shop.
