Caring for the planet

Today our planet is facing a Climate Emergency, we need to radically reduce our impacts, and act with a sense of urgency if we are to keep warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. At Musgrave we are committed to becoming net zero carbon by 2040. This target gives us a long-term focus on systematic and consistent improvements across our business and brands to reduce emissions.

With the impact of climate change being felt globally, we are working now to improve our own business, but also the food system globally. We have a role in helping our customers, colleagues and suppliers in reducing their impact too, from food waste to plastic packaging.

We are committed to eliminating unnecessary plastics from our own brand products, reducing our food waste by 50% by 2030, and improving biodiversity.

We are already making great strides in many of the focus areas. A key highlight is the introduction of our €25m Sustainability Fund, launched in 2022. The Fund is helping to achieve a carbon reduction of 12% across independent SuperValu and Centra stores by end of 2024. The 12% carbon reduction is equivalent to removing over 10,000 tonnes of carbon or planting 380,380 trees across the island of Ireland. Also, 96% of all our fruit and veg, own brand, and in-store packaging in SuperValu and Centra is now recyclable, reusable, or compostable.

Creating vibrant communities

At Musgrave we are committed to creating vibrant, sustainable communities that leave a positive and lasting impact for generations to come. Through our brands, we can impact the communities in which we operate through a focus on social, economic and environmental prosperity. We will continue our commitment to support local suppliers and small independent producers through programmes like Food Academy. And we will promote and support shoppers to adopt healthier and more sustainable diets.
