Larne man wins at inaugural NI Health and Fitness Awards

LARNE man Richard Lusty has won the Centra /Action Cancer Endeavour Award at Northern Ireland’s inaugural Health and Fitness Awards sponsored by Centra.

The prestigious event, which was held in the Crowne Plaza Belfast and attended by 500 guests, celebrated the outstanding achievements of the local health and fitness industry, was presented by Strictly Come Dancing star and health and fitness advocate, Gemma Atkinson and Q Radio’s Ninja Warrior Ibe Sesay with entertainment from BBC’s The Blame Game funny man, Colin Murphy, and local singer Emma Hora.

There were 20 awards across 16 categories recognising the outstanding commitment and contribution from Northern Ireland’s top health and fitness individuals, companies and community engagement initiatives and were independently judged by a highly experienced panel from the health and fitness industry made up of former Ulster, Ireland and British Lions rugby star Stephen Ferris, Centra Ambassador and leading Northern Ireland nutritionist Jane McClenaghan, leading personal trainer Ian Young, fitness blogger Aly Harte and Sunday Life Editor Martin Breen.

A special Centra /Action Cancer Endeavour Award was awarded to Richard Lusty from Centra Larne who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help raise much-needed funds for Centra’s charity, Action Cancer. Funds raised by Centra’s customers go towards funding the Health Action Programme which educates children of all ages about leading healthier lifestyles.

Jennifer Morton, Centra Brand Manager said: “Richard Lusty, and his son, Raymond, decided to go the extra mile for Action Cancer but instead of 1, they went 1000 miles in seven days by doing a lap of Ireland; he also created the ‘Hilly 100’, a 100 mile bike ride in aid of charity and he regularly holds fundraising events in store raising thousands for Action Cancer.   From everyone at Centra, we’d like to say a big thank you to Richard.”

Listowel is Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2018

€1.4m announced for Tidy Towns committees around country to mark 60th anniversary of event

Listowel, Co. Kerry was today (24th September) named as Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2018. In this, the 60th Anniversary year of the TidyTowns competition, Listowel was best of a record number of 883 entries from towns and villages throughout the country in the SuperValu National TidyTowns competition.The announcement was greeted with great jubilation at today’s awards ceremony at The Helix in Dublin.

On hand to present the prizes was Mr. Michael Ring, T.D., Minister for Rural and Community Development and Mr. Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu, the competition’s sponsor for the 27th year. The Helix was packed with representatives of TidyTowns groups from all over the country, eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winners.

Listowel, Co. Kerry also claimed the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town. Other winners included Glaslough, Co. Monaghan receiving the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Village. Westport, Co. Mayo, received the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town, while Ballincollig, Co. Cork was declared as Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, Minister Ring said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Listowel who are very deserving winners. Listowel is one of a small number of centres who have consistently entered the competition since its launch in 1958 and in the intervening years have worked steadfastly on improving their position in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition.  Today, all that dedication and effort has paid off. 

 I also want to congratulate all of the other prize-winners announced today. The work of all those involved in the TidyTowns effort results in the attractive and welcoming towns and villages we see all over the country. The voluntary work that people put in to their communities brings great pride, a great sense of achievement and great camaraderie to those communities. That is why this competition has flourished for 60 years.  

Minister Ring also announced a special allocation of €1.4 million to support the work of individual Tidy Towns Committees around the country in order to mark the 60th anniversary of the event.

The Minister said: “On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the competition, I am making available €1.4 million from the Government in order to directly support the Tidy Towns groups that bring out the best in our towns and villages. I have no doubt that towns and villages across the country will benefit hugely from this investment. Wherever you have active Tidy Towns committees, it gives the place a real boost and creates the environment for tourism.”

The Minister also thanked SuperValu, the competition’s sponsor. He said: “I want to pay tribute to SuperValu, who are now in their 27th year as sponsor and have worked with us to grow the competition. It is getting stronger every year with increased participation, an increased number of awards and a notable increase in the efforts of the communities involved. 

Supervalu have shown fantastic support for the competition, not only through their financial sponsorship but also through the support provided to local TidyTowns groups by their network of local retailers.”

It goes to show that SuperValu TidyTowns is a unique initiative, there is no other competition like it in the rest of Europe, thanks to the commitment of volunteers, committees and SuperValu retailers.

Musgrave to acquire Donnybrook Fair

Musgrave Extends Footprint in the Growing Dublin Food Market

21 September 2018 – Musgrave today announced that it has agreed to acquire Donnybrook Fair for an undisclosed sum, subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

The acquisition includes Donnybrook Fair’s five premium food stores (Donnybrook, Stillorgan, Malahide, Greystones and Baggot Street) situated in Dublin as well as a gourmet food production facility.

Donnybrook Fair is a family business that is owned by Joe and Mary Doyle and employs 250 people. The Donnybrook Fair brand is greatly admired by food lovers and it will be retained and invested in post-acquisition with Joe Doyle remaining in the business.

The acquisition supports Musgrave’s strategy of building brands that provide peoplewith unique food experiences at home and out of home. Donnybrook Fair has successfully focused on meeting these needs through its destination stores and their ability to create gourmet home-cooked food. Donnybrook Fair will strengthen Musgrave’s presence in the growing Dublin food market and will complement Musgrave’s existing brands.

Commenting on the agreement, Chris Martin, Musgrave CEO, said: “Donnybrook Fair represents a fantastic addition to Musgrave. With its focus on creating a destination retail experience as well as a premium food offering, it aligns with our Growing Good Business strategy. We are focused on developing opportunities around every food occasion in a growing market. This included the purchase of La Rousse Foods earlier this year, broadening our offer into the premium foodservice sector. Donnybrook Fair increases our penetration of the Dublin food market and our intention is to maintain and grow the brand for the long term. Joe Doyle has been a retailer his whole life, opening his first butcher shop when he was 17. From an early age he set himself apart from the competition by offering his customers the best quality produce available in an environment that emphasised customer service and the shopping experience.

In 1991 he purchased the grocery store Donnybrook Fair on Morehampton Road in Donnybrook. The combination of high quality homemade food, great customer service, and a unique shopping experience proved a hit with customers.  Joe further opened a store in Baggot St in 2004, followed by stores in Greystones, Stillorgan and Malahide.

The business also operates a wholesale food business, Morehampton Foods, complete with a gourmet production kitchen. Donnybrook Fair also operates a cookery school, and a catering business. The company employs 250 people in total.

20 September 2018 – A great evening of recognition for Centra and SuperValu at the Ballsbridge Hotel on Thursday 20 September concluded with three award wins.

Centra claimed the Best Content Marketing Awards – Video Series for the Live Well campaign, while SuperValu took home the Best Content Marketing Award – Real Time Activation and the overall Grand Prix Award on the night with judges commenting that the quality of the entry and content produced being best in class.

SuperValu launches its new campaign highlighting how value goes beyond the till

Thursday 13th September – SuperValu, Ireland’s largest food retailer has launched its new ‘All Things Considered, it’s SuperValu’ campaign which shows shoppers why ‘All Things Considered’, SuperValu is the only place they need to shop. Through this campaign the retailer gets under the skin of the Irish shopper and unifies everything SuperValu and more importantly, its customers care about – a great own brand product range at affordable prices, fresh healthy food, good customer service, supporting local communities and over 1,800 local and Irish food producers, online shopping and an outstanding Real Rewards programme. The new campaign highlights all the great value that SuperValu offers in-store and beyond the till.

To celebrate the roll out of the new campaign SuperValu is asking the public to consider their shopping trip and take time for what matters from eating more fruit and veg, to going online shopping to save time, buying only Irish products, to shopping own brand and saving money or learning how to make a new dish. New Chipmongers opened in Northern Ireland

Musgrave, Ireland’s leading food retail, wholesale and foodservice business, has opened its fourth successful Chipmongers franchise in Northern Ireland, on the Ballyquin Road in Limavady, creating 12 jobs and investing £130k in the local area.

There are now Chipmongers outlets in Belfast, Lisburn, Ballymena and now Limavady, and the food is proving to be a huge hit with Northern Ireland consumers.

Maurice Cusack, Marketing Manager, Chipmongers, said: “Our Chipmongers outlets have all the usual favourites but with a modern twist, including the Chipmonger Burger which has a ‘satisfying crunch’, 4oz of 100% fresh Irish beef burger, crispy onions, smoked cheese, mixed leaves topped with hickory BBQ sauce served on lightly toasted brioche bun. The menu is so varied that there is something there to suit every taste.”

Chipmongers has just launched a limited-edition music themed menu called, Chipmongers Fest, which will run for 6 weeks, from Wednesday 12th September to Wednesday 24th October, and will be available through all Chipmongers nationwide.

The menu has lots of tempting treats, explained Maurice. “We have the soul inspired ‘Sweet & Smokey Robinson’ chicken burger, with delicious southern fried chicken, smoked bacon and sweet maple syrup. Our blues inspired ‘BB Kinger’ burger features our 4oz fresh beef burgers with caramelised onions, smoked bacon and blue cheese toppings. The ‘Limp Brisket’ is our rock n’ roll inspired Topped chips with our slow cooked pulled beef brisket. Finally, our pop inspired dessert ‘Ed Churros’, fried dough pastry covered with everyone’s favourite chocolate sauce and sugar.”

Musgrave supports International Day of Charity 2018

Charity comes in many forms, from a simple gesture of help to someone in need, to a full-scale international disaster relief programme. At Musgrave charity is important to us and it forms part of our purpose, Growing Good Business and part of our sustainability strategy; building vibrant communities.

Charity also takes many forms within Musgrave, from SuperValu’s annual sponsorship of TidyTowns and fundraising exercises such as the Get Behind the Ball campaign, which donated 55,000 touch footballs to GAA clubs around Ireland – right down to individual in-store fundraising activities for local Scout groups or homeless charities, for example.

A good example of our group-wide charity work is the annual Musgrave Triathlon, which took place two weeks ago in Cork. The 17th Musgrave Triathlon raised €250,000 for three charities; Breakthrough Cancer Research, AsIAm, an autism awareness charity which has worked with SuperValu to develop ‘autism friendly stores’, and Focus Ireland, which works to reduce homelessness in Ireland.

Alongside members of the public and businesses, teams from Musgrave Group and our retail partners all took part in this annual Irish event to complete an 800m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. Over its history the Musgrave Triathlon has raised over €4.65 million for Irish charities, and it has also become a popular event in the calendar where people can get together, set themselves a personal challenge and participate in a healthy activity.

Today is International Day of Charity (September 5th, 2018), an annual awareness day that was launched by the United Nations in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Musgrave was one of the first businesses worldwide to embed the UN SGDs in its sustainability strategy. Since then, the goals have helped guide our sustainability agenda.

Our current sustainability strategy sets out four key areas of work, one of which is building vibrant communities. Our charity work across our network, like the Musgrave Triathlon, is critical to this, channelling funds into local charities that can have a positive impact on the vibrancy of their local area.

On International Day of Charity, it’s a nice time to reflect on all the charitable work done, money donated and volunteer time given by thousands of individuals within the wider Musgrave network. Together our small actions create big changes and make a positive impact on communities close to home and further afield.
