“Towards Responsible Business”, Ireland’s Second National Plan on Corporate Social Responsibility, launched today

Ireland’s Second National Plan on Corporate Social Responsibility 2017-2020, “Towards Responsible Business” was launched today by the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise and Innovation Ms. Frances Fitzgerald T.D.

The Plan articulates a vision for Ireland to be recognised as a Centre of Excellence for responsible and sustainable business practices. It also supports the Government’s objective of building a strong economy and delivering a fair society, so that businesses and communities thrive, throughout Ireland.

At the launch event the Tánaiste, Frances Fitzgerald said: “Today, more than ever, the Irish Government needs to deliver a clear message of encouragement and support to businesses and organisations around Ireland to embed responsible business practices at the core of their business strategies.

“Businesses who communicate openly and transparently about their practices, who tell their story and recognise their impacts on society, foster a culture of trust with their workforce and their customers. CSR is no longer an optional ‘add-on’, but is becoming a necessary part of mainstream operations.”

At Musgrave, we believe that sustainability goes hand-in-hand with the overall health of the community. Recognising that within business, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to shape and influence positive change, we have aligned nine of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals relevant to our business to our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy. This action ensures that we minimise any negative impacts of our business and inspire our stakeholders to follow our lead.

Attending the event, and sharing the stage with other sustainability leaders from the Irish Business Community, John Curran, Head of Sustainability at Musgrave added ’The unique nature of our community based retailers, enables Musgrave to influence the development of sustainable business practices across a wide spectrum of activity. This includes, responsible, local sourcing, exemplified by our Food Academy, working for the development of local producers since its inception in 2014. We are very proud of our continuing contribution to the development of CSR practices in the Irish business landscape’

Centra launches #WeAreHurling team to champion hurling community

As a long-standing sponsor of the GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, Centra today launched #WeAreHurling, which celebrates the passion displayed by all of those in Ireland’s collective hurling community. #WeAreHurling reinforces Centra’s commitment to local communities across Ireland by shining a light on the many people who devote their lives to the game – making our national sport a pillar of Irish pride. Launched today, #WeAreHurling aims to amplify hurling in the hearts and minds of the nation and, by doing so, build stronger communities across modern Ireland.

From players, partners and family members, to volunteers, sponsors and super fans, Centra’s #WeAreHurling team-of-15, which was revealed at today’s launch, encompasses the wide ranging support network that makes up our hurling community. Centra’s #WeAreHurling team includes the likes of Kilkenny hurling legend Henry Shefflin and his wife Deirdre Shefflin, groundskeeper Dave Hanley, Wexford super-star Lee Chin, Cork All-Ireland winner Sean Og Ó hAilpín and his mother Emelie, and Kilkenny super-fan Myles “Elvis” Kavanagh.

Throughout the season, Centra will be championing the team-of-15, who will amplify the nation’s love for the game with insights on the impact hurling has on their lives and their unwavering dedication to the sport. Their accounts will be showcased on Centra’s Facebook and Twitter social channels, throughout the season. As a community retailer with 450 stores nationwide, Centra will also bring #WeAreHurling to life locally throughout the Championship season, with 70 local activations, such as medal presentations, community awards, family fun days, and jersey donations. As part of the campaign, a new Centra television ad will also showcase the passion behind #WeAreHurling.

Speaking about Centra’s new #WeAreHurling campaign, Martin Kelleher, Centra Managing Director said: “Centra is at the heart of communities across Ireland and is instrumental in reinforcing the passion and commitment for hurling at a local level, helping to build stronger communities nationwide. This year, we are not only celebrating the elite athletes of the GAA, but those who aid the development of the sport throughout communities across Ireland.”

Speaking about Centra’s #WeAreHurling campaign at today’s launch, Kilkenny hurling legend and Centra ambassador, Henry Shefflin said: “For those who play hurling, it is very refreshing to see the championing of the wider hurling community, because without everyone playing their role, both on and off the pitch, the sport would not be the success it is today. I have a very supportive family who encouraged me throughout the years – even when it meant missing family occasions because of my commitment to the game.”

Also speaking at today’s launch, Emelie O’hAilpin, mother of sporting superstars, Sean Og, Aiske, Teu and Setanta, said: “Like any mother, I always had nerves watching my children play sport, but I always encouraged them to take part, from a young age. It gave them good discipline, it gave them a passion and it provided great social inclusion for their own development, so I always tried to support the boys in any way possible.”

Sharon Buckley of Musgrave named a WXN 2017 Ireland’s Most Powerful Women: Top 25 Award Winner

This year, Sharon will also be inducted into the Women’s Executive Network Hall of Fame, having been named as one of 25 of Ireland’s most influential and successful women for the third year. The other recipients of the award this year such as Olympian, Annalise Murphy; CEO of Leicester City Football Club, Susan Whelan; and Director General of RTE, Dee Forbes reflect the esteem in which Sharon is held across the Irish business community.

Musgrave MarketPlace Announces Culinary Arts Support Programme with DIT

Significant investment to support future chefs of Ireland

Musgrave MarketPlace, Ireland’s leading wholesale supplier to retail, foodservice and SME businesses today announced a €250,000 culinary arts support programme with DIT Grangegorman that will see the development of a new training restaurant and annual scholarship fund for the college’s School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology. The programme is part of Musgrave MarketPlace’s ongoing commitment to supporting the development of the Irish food sector and investing in up-and-coming chefs and future leaders of the food industry.

The Musgrave MarketPlace training restaurant will serve as a state-of–the-art teaching space in the heart of the new DIT campus at Grangegorman. The restaurant will provide training facilities for over 800 students from 11 different full and part-time programmes within the DIT School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology, as well as the wider student population in hospitality and tourism studies.

The wholesaler has also launched a new scholarship fund for Culinary Arts students at DIT which will support eight high achievers studying for a Bachelor of Culinary Arts honours degrees and Bachelor of Culinary Entrepreneurship honours degrees. Each Musgrave MarketPlace scholarship is valued at €3,000 and the first group of scholarship recipients was announced in November 2016. The scholarships will be funded on an annual basis as part of the wholesaler’s focus on the development of food leadership and investment in the future of the Irish food sector.

Commenting on the announcement, Michelle Fennell, Marketing Director of Musgrave MarketPlace, said, “We are delighted to launch this programme with DIT. Supporting the future influencers and leaders of the Irish food sector is hugely important for us and for the continued development of the industry. SuperValu gets behind the ball this summer with the GAA

As a long-standing sponsor of the GAA All Ireland Football Championships, SuperValu is getting #BehindTheBall this summer and is set to reinforce its unwavering support and commitment to local communities across Ireland by introducing a new campaign that will help inspire the future stars of the GAA and encourage more people to volunteer for their local GAA club.

Kicking off in all SuperValu stores nationwide on Thursday 22nd June, SuperValu will commence a nine-week programme which will see individual retailers donate 55,000 GAA ‘First Touch’ footballs to clubs across the country, an ambitious initiative designed to get children as young as six playing football and exercising more regularly. Through the initiative, SuperValu customers will receive ‘#BehindTheBall’ tokens, which they can then use to allocate to a local GAA club of their choice at the in-store collection points.

Furthermore, SuperValu will also deliver a number of GAA volunteer events throughout the summer designed to encourage parents to volunteer at their local club and give them the skills to teach and develop the kids across all aspects of the game. Families will be urged to get #BehindTheBall and play an active role in their clubs with the intention of strengthening clubs volunteer pools and getting inactive families more active in their community. These events will be supported by SuperValu’s line-up of exciting GAA ambassadors, including Dublin GAA’s Bernard Brogan, Kerry GAA’s Donnchadh Walsh, Mayo GAA’s Lee Keegan and Monaghan GAA’s Conor McManus.

As a winner of four All Ireland medals, Bernard Brogan realises just how important it is to get children playing sport from an early an age as possible. Playing with St Oliver Plunkett’s for over two decades, Brogan knows that a plentiful supply of footballs is vital to club members and to the club’s development. Bernard is urging shoppers to support their local GAA club by getting behind SuperValu’s new initiative.

Commenting at the launch, Brogan said, “It’s a privilege to support SuperValu’s exciting ‘Behind The Ball’ campaign. I can still remember the first time I got to train and play with St Oliver Plunkett’s. It’s a very special memory that turned out to be the start of an amazing journey, which has seen me play at every level for club and county not to mention the fact that I made friends for life along the way. Whether you’re a member of a GAA club or not this is a really positive way to give back to children in your local community.”

Now in its eighth season as an official partner of the All Ireland Football Championship, SuperValu’s network of retailers continue to show a remarkable commitment to the sport, not just at national but also regional level and typify how SuperValu can have a direct benefit to the local communities in which they are embedded. Musgrave Group Plc Announces Appointment of Chris Pilling as Non-Executive Director

Musgrave is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Pilling as Non-Executive Director on the board of Musgrave Group plc. Chris succeeds Brian Flanagan, a Non-Executive Director since 2013.

Chris Pilling has a background in retail and financial services, having served as Director of Marketing and Customer Services for UK retailer ASDA, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Building Society – the second largest building society in the UK, and previously holding a number of executive positions with HSBC Bank plc. Chris has also worked with leading international corporates including British Airways, Kraft Foods and Procter & Gamble. Until March of this year, he was a Non-Executive Director on the board of the Department of Health for the UK Government.

Supervalu Partners with Co. Wexford Farmer to Bring World-Renowned Irish Wagyu Beef to Consumers

SuperValu, the leading Irish grocery retailer, today announced the launch of an exclusive range of Irish Wagyu beef. SuperValu’s Wagyu beef is 100% Irish born and bred, reared on a farm in Co. Wexford by Bord Bia Quality Assured farmer, Karl Strehlow. Originating in Japan and more recently bred in Australia, Wagyu beef is characterised by its intense marbling which leads to an extremely tender and juicy meat with a unique and distinctive flavour.

All SuperValu Irish Wagyu beef is under 30 months, with steak cuts matured for a minimum of 21 days. In recent years Wagyu has become a beef breed famous for its consistent high quality, featuring on the menus of some of the best restaurants in the world.

Enactus DCU to represent Ireland at international social entrepreneurship competition

On May 31st, Enactus DCU was crowned the 2017 Enactus Ireland National Champion and the team to represent Ireland at the prestigious and inspiring Enactus World Cup event in London this September. The team saw off competition from nine other colleges, Cork Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, Dublin Institute of Technology, Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Maynooth University, NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin and University of Limerick.

The team at DCU worked on three projects in 2016/2017, Second Scoop, ‘HeadstARTs’ and Well On The Way with Second Scoop being the project to set them apart and ensure their win at the event.

‘Second Scoop’ is a partnership brokered by Enactus DCU between the ice-cream producer, Ben & Jerry, and ex-prisoners from ‘Care After Prison’, a peer led charity organisation (the first of its kind in Ireland) which provides information, referral and support services to ex-offenders following release from imprisonment. The partnership facilitates Ben & Jerry ice-cream to be sold at corporate events, festivals and fairs by clients of the charity. A pilot phase was carried out in May on DCU campus and the team has lined up two further corporate events for June.

Their second project, ‘Well On The Way’, is a social enterprise that sells bottled water and uses 100% of net profit to build wells in Democratic Republic of Congo. The enterprise is staffed in Ireland by asylum seekers, providing business apprenticeships and assisting their integration into society. To date the team has provided apprenticeships for two asylum seekers and raised over €20,000 in revenue. Their first well is due to be built over summer 2017. Enactus DCU’s final project, ‘HeadstARTs’, provides weekly classes in dance, drama, music and art for people with intellectual disabilities.

Everyone involved in Enactus is committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to make a social impact and shape a better and more sustainable world. We also showcased Well On The Way water at head office in May to share with colleagues the work carried out by Enactus teams.

SuperValu and Marketplace take over the podium at the recent Sockies Social Media awards

The Sockies are Ireland’s leading social media awards, sponsored by SpunOut.ie, with 30 award categories spanning across a range of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. This year more than 800 nominations were submitted by over 200 organisations across Ireland, of which 30 received awards at the Sockies ceremony on May 25th at the RDS Concert Hall.

Musgrave was at the party with both SuperValu and MarketPlace receiving multiple nominations and coming home with multiple awards.

SuperValu bowled over the judges to win Best use of Facebook In-house team managed; Best digital video campaign and best In-House Social Media team. They were then announced as the overall Grand Prix winner, as selected by the panel of judges. This selection was against competition that included Universal Music, AIB, Bulmers, Tesco Mobile, Aerlingus, Lidl to name but a few.

Musgrave MarketPlace entered the 2017 Best Business Twitter Campaign Category and was selected as the winning campaign entry for this category on the basis of the campaign quality, innovation and online engagement.

Hosted by expert mixologist Robert Caldwell on Wednesday 7th December 2016 from 6pm to 7pm the Twitter Tasting #MMPGin marked the final instalment of the 2016 series of Twitter Tasting events.

It showcased the premium gin and spirits range available at Musgrave MarketPlace to trade and food/alcohol media and bloggers, and promoted Musgrave MarketPlace as a key distributor of a wide variety of quality alcohol over the festive period and into the New Year.

Ahead of the event, tasting packs filled with Robert’s chosen gins, cocktail mixers and utensils along with accompanying snacks from the Musgrave MarketPlace range were sent to participating media and bloggers.

The tasting was hosted at the new ‘Gin Palace’ within the Musgrave MarketPlace Ballymun store, where Robert and the tasting team sent a live stream of cocktail instructions, serving tips and gin trivia via the @MusgraveMPlace twitter feed. Media and bloggers participated from their homes and offices, uploading their own comments, questions, pictures and videos. Participants were also invited to take part in a Greatest Gatsby Selfie competition to boost the volume of interaction and imagery uploads throughout the tasting.

BY the end of the hour #MMPGin was trending no.1 in Ireland. With 16 media and bloggers participating in the event; 118,556 Twitter accounts were reached throughout the tasting and over 1 million hashtag impressions achieved for #MMPGin
