SuperValu predicts sales of new season Irish carrots to reach €8 million in 2017

SuperValu, the leading Irish grocery retailer, today announced that it expects to sell €8 million in home grown Irish carrots this year. SuperValu’s Irish carrots are 100% Bord Bia Quality assured and grown by fifth-generation family famers, TJ, Tommy and James O’Shea in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny.

O’Shea Farms are experienced crop producers, having grown fresh Irish carrots and potatoes on their 1600 acre farm in Piltown since 1830. The brothers began supplying Irish carrots to a number of SuperValu stores in 1981 and have grown their partnership to cover the entire network of 219 SuperValu stores across Ireland today.

Commenting on the announcement, Martin Kelleher, Managing Director, SuperValu said, “As the number one supporter of the Irish agri-food industry, we source from more Irish suppliers than any other retailer in Ireland. Our long-standing partnership with O’Shea Farms has allowed us to give shoppers the very best in locally sourced fresh Irish produce, and we will continue to leverage this relationship as we drive our strategy of fresh food leadership.

TJ O’Shea added, “We have been supplying Irish carrots to SuperValu for over 35 years now, and the relationship we have with them has been a contributing factor to growing our business to the point where we employ over 200 people today. We guarantee the best quality by harvesting carrots every morning at 5am and then washing, cooling, packing and dispatching them the very same day as intake. As a result, when you buy our carrots at SuperValu, you can be assured that you are putting the best Irish produce on the dinner table.

SuperValu serves over 2.6 million customers every week and has 219 stores nationwide. Together with its retail partners, SuperValu employs approximately 14,500 colleagues, making it one of the State’s largest private sector employers. SuperValu sources from over 2,200 Irish suppliers – more than any other grocery retailer in the Irish market – equating to an annual economic contribution of €2.19 billion. SuperValu continues to source locally wherever possible which helps to sustain 30,000 jobs in the Irish economy.

SuperValu announces eir as latest partner as part of €40 million investment in Real Rewards loyalty programme

Pictured at the announcement are SuperValu Managing Director, Martin Kelleher with eir CEO Richard Moat and Toni Mack, Supervalu Killester employee.

SuperValu, the leading Irish community grocery retailer, has announced a new partnership with eir, Ireland’s largest communications company, as part of its Real Rewards loyalty programme. The partnership represents a further milestone in SuperValu’s ambition for Real Rewards to become the number one loyalty programme in the country, through the addition of a range of exciting new partners and an investment of €40 million.

The new partnership with eir means that SuperValu customers can now collect Real Rewards loyalty points by linking their eir broadband or landline account, as well as using points to avail of discounts of up to €60 off future eir bills. The offer, which goes live on the 21st August, is open to all eir fixed line and broadband customers.

To illustrate the level of savings being made available to customers, €40 million in value has been delivered back to shoppers since the relaunch of Real Rewards, with an additional seven figure investment to be made during the course of the year.

Commenting on the announcement, SuperValu Managing Director Martin Kelleher said, “Continuous innovation is at the core of SuperValu’s business as we look for more ways to reward our customers for their loyalty. We are excited to partner with a brand as progressive as eir and we look forward to giving our customers even more opportunities to earn points as they link their Real Rewards card to their eir account.”

Richard Moat, eir CEO, said, “There is great synergy between eir and SuperValu, another great Irish brand, and we are delighted to partner with them on the Real Rewards scheme. Our customers can save up to €60 on their bill, as well as collecting and using points for the things that matter to them. This is our way of saying thanks to our many loyal customers in a real and tangible way.”

SuperValu Real Rewards/eir partnership – How it works:

The partnership with eir allows the 1.1 million members of SuperValu’s Real Rewards programme to earn points in a variety of ways:

  • By linking their myeir membership account and SuperValu Real Rewards card, customers will receive a bonus of 100 points, and can then earn 1 Real Rewards point for every €2 paid off their eir landline or broadband bill;
  • Customers collect 1 Real Rewards point per €1 spend when they use their Real Rewards card at any SuperValu or online at SuperValu.ie;
  • As a celebration of the partnership, for the months of August and September SuperValu customers can convert 250 Real Rewards points into a €5 discount
  • Various promotional offers will be run throughout the year to earn bonus points.

In October of last year, SuperValu announced Bank of Ireland as the first in a number of new partners from a range of leading Irish brands to be incorporated into the relaunched Real Rewards programme, building upon its existing relationships with Electric Ireland and Getaway Breaks. Since the successful relaunch, an additional 160,000 customers have joined the scheme, bringing the total membership to 1.1 million people. With the addition of eir, SuperValu is giving customers even more ways to get even more value from the Real Rewards programme.

SuperValu own brand products: the choice of customers – and chefs

Our leading supermarket brand SuperValu has scooped an impressive 31 accolades at The Great Taste Awards this year.

Not only did SuperValu take away the highest number of awards on the evening but its own brand Crème Fraiche was awarded three gold stars, making it the highest-ranked own brand product by an Irish retailer.

We see these awards as not just a comment on how tasty our food is, but also as an endorsement of the work we do – not only with SuperValu, but across our brands. It’s work that involves constantly testing and improving our products – to ensure the best possible taste, of course, but also to monitor levels of salt, sugar and fats and reduce these where possible.

We know our own brand products taste great – we receive excellent customer feedback. However, to have industry experts, chefs and food critics giving them their seal of approval is particularly pleasing.

The achievement underlines our commitment as a business to work with the cream of Irish producers. At Musgrave, we source from more Irish suppliers than any other retailer or wholesaler in Ireland. Without these suppliers and their commitment to producing high-quality and sustainable produce, our own brand products would not have the outstanding flavour and appeal that gets them noticed by customers and chefs alike.

Commenting on the win, Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu said, “Bringing the best of locally sourced, quality fresh food to consumers is what SuperValu is all about, and we are incredibly proud to be recognised with so many accolades at this year’s Great Taste Awards.”

Some of the other products to receive the awards included SuperValu’s Signature Taste range Irish Hampshire Pork T-Bone Steak and Beechwood Smoked Rack of Irish Hampshire Bacon, SuperValu Signature Taste Jewel Topped Pudding and SuperValu sour cream – all receiving two stars. Over the last three years SuperValu has received over 100 accolades at The Great Taste Awards.
