Musgrave donates €35,000 to Cork Penny Dinners

Chef Kevin Dundon Cooks for Food Charity’s Volunteers

Musgrave Triathlon Committee today (Monday, December 18th) donated a cheque for €35,000 to food charity Cork Penny Dinners. Musgrave’s Triathlon fundraising event raised a total of €205,000 for charities this year. Musgrave’s Triathlon fundraiser also donated €35,000 to children’s ambulance service Bumbleance, €35,000 to Pieta House and €100,000 to Breakthrough Cancer Research.

Cork Penny Dinners, which was established during the Famine as a soup kitchen, feeds approximately 200 people every day and serves 1,000 meals a week, compared to just 150 meals a few years ago.

Edelle Bruton, Musgrave Triathlon Organiser, presented the cheque for €35,000 to Caitriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners at the charity’s premises in Little Hannover, Cork city.

SuperValu also sent celebrity chef Kevin Dundon to cook Christmas Dinner for the Cork Penny Dinners’ volunteers after the daily dinner service was finished.

Commenting on the donation, Edelle Bruton from Musgrave said: “As a community-based retailer, we are delighted to support the invaluable service that Cork Penny Dinners provides. It is important for communities to help those who are vulnerable, especially at this time of year, and we hope that this donation will provide the support for Cork Penny Dinners to continue its vital work.”

Caitriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners said: “I am honoured to accept this generous donation from Musgrave. It will go a long way in helping us to provide hot, nourishing meals to service users during the festive period and into the next year. On behalf of everyone at Cork Penny Dinners, I would like to thank Musgrave.”

Cork Penny Dinners is open every day throughout the festive period from 9.00am to 1.30pm.

Musgrave reaches agreement with Aryzta to acquire La Rousse Foods

Musgrave today announced that it has agreed to acquire La Rousse Foods from Aryzta for an undisclosed sum, subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

La Rousse Foods is one of the leading operators in the foodservice sector, specialising in the supply of fine foods to premium food establishments for over 25 years. With offices in Dublin and Belfast, the company serves more than 1,500 customers. Musgrave’s intention is that La Rousse Foods will continue to operate as a standalone brand post acquisition.

Commenting on the deal, Chris Martin, Musgrave CEO, said: “La Rousse Foods is an excellent strategic fit for our business and complements our market-leading foodservice offer. We look forward to working with the La Rousse Foods team and customers who will benefit from the support of Musgrave in terms of supply chain infrastructure and access to an increased product range. The acquisition forms part of our Growing Good Business strategy, which focuses on growing our brands in the food market across the island of Ireland.”

SuperValu announces further commitment to supporting families with autism across its network of stores

Road map for change to introduce best-in-class initiatives

Autism affects between 1-2% of the population and there are at least 50,000 families with an autistic child in Ireland. SuperValu is already leading the charge when it comes to initiatives that support those families with Autism friendly shopping evenings already happening in just under 40 SuperValu stores around the country.

SuperValu are committed to building on this by enhancing the shopping experience through a roadmap for change which in time will be rolled out in stores around the country. This will be rolled out across the next 12 months.

Heralded as ‘world-class’, the new initiatives have been designed in conjunction with the Middletown Centre for Autism, as well as Autism friendly trolleys in as many stores, some of the new initiatives include;

  • Autism Friendly shopping times – a commitment to rolling sensory friendly times in more stores across the next year.
  • Development of Store Mapsto pre-plan the store visit indicating the main areas and quiet areas in store.
  • De-sensitisation of store sounds at designated shopping times: with downloadable store sounds to assist in de-stressing the store visit;
  • Reduce & standardise beep sounds on tills in stores nationwide;
  • Staff awareness: E-learning modules available to all staff to tackle a general lack of awareness around autism and educate on how the steps taken in store will make a difference;
  • Autism friendly trolleys: Support the use of the ALF (Autism Lifeskill Friend) trolley – developed by a SuperValu employee;
  • An expert panel established to meet three times a year to ensure that all initiatives are impactful, and relevant for families with autism

Speaking at the launch Gary Cooper, CEO Middletown Centre for Autism said, ‘I welcome the development of the inclusive environments that are being created in store for the autism community and commend the Supervalu team for their foresight and commitment to this world-class initiative.’

SuperValu Marketing Director, Des O’Mahony said, “We began this journey 18 months ago with Autism Friendly shopping times and the introduction of an Autism friendly trolley in a small number of stores and the response was overwhelmingly positive. It was important for us to make sure that any next steps we took were the right ones to create a holistic support structure for families with Autism; that we were working to create a mind-set change as well as an infrastructural one. We have been working hard with the Middletown Centre for Autism to create online and instore material that will provide support for families with autism as well as raise awareness among the wider community.”

Mr Finian McGrath TD, was also in attendance at the launch, “I am delighted to see SuperValu leading the change in providing this vital support for members of the Autistic community. With a SuperValu store in so many towns across the length and breadth of the country it is fantastic that SuperValu is committed to rolling this enhanced shopping experience out in more stores.

New €8.5m SuperValu opens in Bantry, Co. Cork

A new, purpose built, state-of-the-art SuperValu was officially opened recently at Harbour View in Bantry. The cutting of the ribbon to mark the new store opening was performed by 6 members of staff that together have 210 years service at O’Keeffe’s SuperValu in Bantry. Celebrity Chef Martin Shanahan, Sports Commentator Marty Morrissey and a number of local GAA legends were on hand to welcome shoppers to the new 16,700 sq. ft. SuperValu Bantry. More than 100 people will be employed at the new SuperValu in Bantry, which offers shoppers several new services and facilities. More than 100 local tradesman and builders with Murnane O’Shea were employed on site during construction also.

“We want to ensure the best possible shopping experience, choice and value for the people of Bantry and the surrounding area, and that is why we developed this new store at Harbour View with ample parking, a spacious showcase area for local producers, a café and barista style coffee dock, as well as our own onsite bakery, improved off licence, cheese and olive bar and extended health and wellness range,” said Jim O’Keeffe, Proprietor, SuperValu Bantry.

“It is also our incredible staff at SuperValu Bantry that add to the shopping experience at O’Keeffe’s and I’m proud to acknowledge today that many of our team have been working with us for several decades and it was really special to have the official opening performed by those whom together have over two centuries combined service.”

The new SuperValu in Bantry, which overlooks the stunning Bantry Bay and new marina, is located adjacent to a large car parking area and also has 65 overhead covered car spaces onsite. New facilities at the store include a café and restaurant, barista-style coffee dock, onsite bakery, off licence, extended health food range and cheese and olive bar. With an ample supply of artisan producers, the new SuperValu also includes a large area where local producers and SuperValu Food Academy participants can display their products and engage directly with consumers.
