SuperValu & SEAI donation helps make a greener future for Barnardos

Creating better communities is central to what we do at SuperValu, so we are delighted to be supporting Barnardos, Ireland’s leading independent children’s charity. Together with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), we’ve donated €275,000 in energy grants to Barnardos. The donation will help improve the energy efficiency of 22 family care centres in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Westmeath, Offaly, Carlow and Tipperary. It is estimated this will save Barnardos €30,000 a year in energy costs, allowing more resources to be directly channelled into much-needed services for vulnerable children and their families.

To further support energy efficiency initiatives in the community, we’ve donated €82,000 to the Glenasmore Community in Dublin towards upgrading their school and community centre. The donation has also provided smart metres for 10 local homes. Both donations come from 19 SuperValu stores across the country at a time when these stores are investing a combined €1.5 million in energy efficient technologies, which will cut energy consumption by up to 30%.

We hope the donations will not only improve energy efficiency, but have a lasting impact on local communities and people’s lives.

140,000 turkeys and 200,000 hams make SuperValu Ireland’s No. 1 grocery retailer at Christmas

It was good news for Irish retailers this month as recent market growth is the strongest since January 2009. The latest supermarket share figures from Kantar Worldpanel showed overall market growth of 3.5% in the 12 weeks ending 3 January.

Once again SuperValu is the number one retailer in Ireland. We’ve continued to grow and now have a market share of 25.1%, boosted by a strong performance over Christmas. SuperValu has worked hard to give customers what they want – fresh, locally sourced quality Irish produce and a fantastic in-store experience.

We’re delighted so many people chose to shop at SuperValu this Christmas, which is traditionally the busiest shopping period of the year. Our results showed a 4.3% sales increase in the 12 weeks up to 3 January and a 6.5% increase in the number of transactions this Christmas. To put this into context, we sold over 140,000 turkeys and over 200,000 hams – all born, bred and reared in Ireland – in December alone!

Employees honoured at Pride of Centra awards

Centra’s employees are key to the success of the business, and last year we established the Pride of Centra awards to recognise colleagues who go above and beyond their duties and responsibilities. The awards celebrate hard working employees who show exceptional commitment to community initiatives, charity organisations, customer service and imaginative in-store ideas.

At the second Pride of Centra awards, Susan Doherty of Kelly’s Centra Letterkenny claimed top honours. Beating strong competition from 13 other finalists, judges chose Susan as the standout winner for her community based charity work and outstanding customer service. Susan is from the local area and has built strong relationships with customers, knowing them by their first names and ensuring they have everything they need. Even when she’s not working, Susan devotes her spare time to arranging in-store charity events and staff outings.

Susan commented; “It is such an honour to receive this Pride of Centra award. The past few years with Kelly’s Centra have been so enjoyable and the store plays an important role in the community. I would like to thank all our customers in Letterkenny for their ongoing loyalty and support to all our initiatives.”

Centra stores are at the heart of the local community and our charity initiatives make a real difference to both local and nationwide charities. Last year thousands of people got involved in Centra’s Walk the World initiative to raise much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer programme. Visit your local Centra store today to find out how you can help your local community.

Wine awards raise a glass to SuperValu

On Sunday 3rd January, SuperValu walked away with two top accolades at the prestigious Sunday Business Post Wine Awards. The awards celebrate outstanding achievements in the wine and spirits business, and SuperValu won Best Supermarket Wine Outlet 2015 as well as an innovation award for Retail Excellence of Display and Structure.

SuperValu stood out because of its unrivalled range of wine, spirits and beers. We were thrilled to get recognition but of course, the real reward is giving customers outstanding choice and value. SuperValu’s wine and off-licence team work with the best wineries around the world to give shoppers a huge choice of quality products. We also look at consumer trends and now stock an impressive selection of craft beers, Irish whiskeys and premium gins to meet customer demand.

Throughout 2015 we’ve worked hard to spread the word about our wine and spirit business through social media, wine events, in-store tastings and our Uncorked magazine, which highlights the tipples on offer. Speaking about the awards, wine connoisseur Thomás Clancy described SuperValu’s Blackrock store as “the absolute pinnacle of the dedicated wine and spirit outlet”. He likened SuperValu Blackrock to Harrods with enomatic machines with wines for tasting and an extensive variety of quality wines and spirits. The Blackrock store also has pour-your-own taps for customers who want to reuse their own quart or growler bottles for beer.

So if you’re looking to treat yourself or sample something different, drop in to SuperValu and speak to one of our in-store experts today.
