Recognition for Musgrave Wholesale Partners at NISO/NISG Safety Awards

It’s a sobering statistic, but nationwide 56 people died from injuries in the workplace last year. The National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) works to help organisations reduce the number of fatalities and injuries by offering education, training and helping to promote a culture of excellence in workplace health and safety. Companies can play a positive role in adopting a proactive approach to health and safety, and each year the NISO/NISG All Ireland Safety Awards recognises excellence in health and safety practices.

We were delighted that Musgrave Wholesale Partners won the ‘Retail/Wholesale’ category at this year’s awards held on 2 October 2015 in Galway. Musgrave Wholesale Partners demonstrated a proactive culture of safety management and Catherine Lambe, Human Resources Director collected the award with Mark Dunne, Health and Safety Manager Wholesale Partners.

The awards were co-presented by Martin O’Halloran, CEO, Health and Safety Authority (HSA); Keith Morrison, CEO, Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI); Pauric Corrigan, President, National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO); Jimmy Fenton, Chairperson, Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISG) and Dermot Carey, Head of Safety Services, Construction Industry Federation (CIF).

Musgrave’s Peter O’Neill is Ireland’s Best Truck Driver!

Congratulations to Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland (MRPI) employee Peter O’Neill, who recently won the title of ‘Best Truck Driver’ at the 2016 Fleet Transport Awards.

The competition saw hundreds of applicants whittled down to 10 for a place in the final. In a gruelling finale covering driving theory, eco-driving, manoeuvring and load-securing testing, Peter came top, cheered on by his friends and family. Peter was presented his prize last month at the 9th annual Fleet Transport Awards Gala Dinner in Dublin.

Peter is a valuable member of the Musgrave team and has worked for the group for the past 18 years. Covering the Southern half of Ireland, he is responsible for delivering chilled food to all SuperValu and Centra stores as well as back loads from producers.

Food Academy wins marketing award at National Checkout FMCG Awards

There are so many reasons why “we believe in local” at SuperValu. Local produce tastes better, is more sustainable and supports local businesses which in turn boosts the local economy.

That’s why we created the Food Academy programme with Bord Bia and the Local Enterprise Office Network. It’s about working with and supporting local food start-ups, giving advice on all aspects of the food business and securing valuable space on supermarket shelves. Food Academy currently supports over 200 small businesses in Ireland, helping give small producers a big chance.

So we were thrilled to get recognition at at the National Checkout FMCG Awards recently. SuperValu won ‘Best Integrated Marketing Campaign’ for its Food Academy campaign, beating tough competition from the likes of Lidl, Carlsberg and Britvic. Judges commented: “SuperValu’s Food Academy has been one of the real success stories of Irish retail over the past year – with a widespread multi-platform campaign supported by in-store activity right across the group’s store estate. Since launch, the range has generated a 40% increase in sales for participating suppliers.”

SuperValu accounts for €2 million in annual Irish craft beer sales

Brú Brewery Secures €200,000 Contract With SuperValu And Launches Exclusive New Gluten Free Craft Lager

SuperValu, the leading Irish grocery retailer, has announced that it contributes €2 million in sales to the Irish craft beer market each year. SuperValu also announced details of a €200,000 contract with Brú Brewery, which includes the exclusive rights for the Irish microbrewery’s new 500ml format gluten free lager that will be available in-store from November. The deal will enable the brewery to create three jobs.

Since Brú Brewery started trading with SuperValu in September 2013, the Irish microbrewer has doubled the amount of cases it supplies the grocery retailer each year. The company originally started in 2013 with two staff and now employs eight staff. It will now add three additional staff before the end of the year to meet growing demand. The latest contract comes after the Irish craft beer brewing company won three awards at the 2015 World Beer Awards.

The Irish craft beer market has grown rapidly over the past number of years due to consumers increasingly opting for premium beer brands. Over the past year alone over 400 new beers have been launched in Ireland. As part of its support for Irish suppliers, SuperValu identified the trend early and has supported a range of Irish microbreweries by stocking their brands in-store. As a result, SuperValu now holds 20% share of the Irish craft beer market and is outperforming the market, particularly in the ale category with a 66% year-on-year increase in sales.

Commenting on the announcement, Minister for Agriculture, Marine and Food, Simon Coveney TD, said: “Brú Brewery’s continued success reflects the huge potential of Ireland’s craft beer sector. Beyond the jobs created directly by Irish microbreweries, there are also additional knock-on benefits for the local economy and for farm families who supply locally sourced ingredients to companies like Brú Brewery. By giving Irish microbrewers like Brú Brewery the opportunity to grow sustainably, SuperValu is helping the Irish craft beer sector to build its reputation both domestically and abroad.

Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu, added: “We source Irish wherever possible, which equates to an annual contribution of almost €2 billion to the economy. We’re delighted to support this emerging sector and help Irish microbreweries grow, particularly as we are able to offer them the opportunity to supply to individual stores given our local ownership structure. That’s why we support over 2,200 Irish suppliers, which is over four times more than any of the international retailers, putting more back into the local economy and creating jobs like the three new positions at Brú Brewery

SuperValu continues to source locally wherever possible and purchases almost €2 billion worth of goods from Irish suppliers, which helps sustain 30,000 jobs in the Irish economy.

MarketPlace takes a dive for children’s charity

MarketPlace employees taking part in a skydive for LauraLynn

Here at Musgrave, we’re always ready to take on a challenge for a good cause. And on Saturday 26th September, eleven Musgrave MarketPlace employees from various sites around the country completed a skydive from a moving plane at 10,000 feet to raise funds for LauraLynn. To put into context, that’s 10 times the height of the Eiffel Tower!

LauraLynn is Ireland’s only children’s hospice and provides respite, transitional and crisis care for children with life-limiting conditions in their family home or at LauraLynn house – a home away from home. The charity offers support for the whole family, and all services are free of charge.

A total of €2,600 was raised by the group and everyone involved had such an amazing experience they are planning a 14,000 feet skydive for 2016!

“MarketPlace employees decided to raise funds for LauraLynn by really taking to the skies. It was a wonderful experience for all involved and we would like to thank everyone who supported us by raising funds for LauraLynn”, said Jeremy Keogh, HR Musgrave Partners.

Jump on-board this October for Breast Cancer!

Enthusiastic members of the Cork Dragons take to the water in support of Centra’s Breast Cancer Awareness month

Throughout October, Centra stores from across the country will be raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness month. On 17 October Centra is encouraging thousands of customers to take part in ‘Walk the Walk’ to collectively walk 47,075km for this worthwhile cause.

In Centra stores in Cork, the proceeds will go to the Cork Dragons, a support group for breast cancer survivors. The Cork Dragons was established in 2012 to promote the benefits of exercise after breast cancer through dragon boat racing. On Friday 2 October the Cork Dragons showcased their talents on the River Lee to raise funds to buy a new boat.   

Speaking at the event, Caroline Warren, Cork Dragons member, said; “I joined the Cork Dragons in 2012 following breast cancer treatment and the group has made a massive difference to my life. There are currently 45 members, all from Cork city and county, and we are united together by the experiences we have faced and come through. Battling breast cancer has been a struggle for each and every one of us but through this support group we can show people that you can have a full and healthy life after a cancer diagnosis and that you do not have to fight cancer alone. We have been borrowing a boat from Meitheal Mara so we are so grateful to Centra for their support and we look forward to adding a second boat to our little fleet!”

Ian Allen, Sales Director of Centra, added; “It is fantastic to see these men and women out on the dragon boats today, healthy and happy. Centra has supported breast cancer through the Irish Cancer Society for the past five years and we are really looking forward to adding this initiative to our cause this year. Breast cancer has affected so many people around Ireland and we are delighted to be able to support our local community through the Cork Dragons.”

Keeping Ireland tidy

A clean, well-cared for town makes people feel good about where they live and helps build vibrant communities. It’s in this spirit that the SuperValu TidyTowns competition is going from strength to strength.

This year Letterkenny, Co Donegal won the coveted award, beating tough competition from over 860 towns and villages throughout the country. Clonegal, Co Carlow won Ireland’s Tidiest Village, Listowel, Co Kerry claimed the prize for Tidiest Small Town and Westport, Co Mayo was named Tidiest Large Town. Letterkenny also won overall prize for Tidiest Large Urban Centre. Mr Alan Kelly, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government joined Martin Kelleher, SuperValu Managing Director to give out the prizes. Minister Kelly said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Letterkenny; a real worthy winner. Letterkenny has entered the competition every year since 1959 and their win today is testament to them consistently achieving high standards in the competition at local and regional level.”

Top Chef Neven Maguire Launches Revitalised SuperValu NI

Here at Musgrave, we’re always looking at ways to improve customer experience. Our SuperValu brand is having a makeover in Northern Ireland and top chef Neven Maguire was on hand to launch the first new look SuperValu store this month. Large crowds gathered to see the unveiling of Hegarty’s SuperValu store in Fintona, Co. Tyrone at the Taste of Tyrone food exhibition.

Hegarty’s SuperValu is the first in NI to showcase the new SV spec, design and range. The refurbished store now has a much bigger fresh offering, in-store bakery, expanded off-licence, exciting new Food to Go offering, larger hot and cold deli, enhanced hot beverage facilities, new fresh ranges, locally produced ready to heat and ready to cook meal solutions and fresh meat ranges.

Neven and store owners Karen and Garvan Hegarty were joined by the local community to sample great local food in-store and see Neven in action in live cooking demos. The Taste of Tyrone exhibition celebrates local produce, and visitors enjoyed a host of family-friendly attractions including a free BBQ, face painting, balloon animals, a bucking bronco and bouncy castle.

“It was fantastic to meet everyone in Fintona and such a privilege to be asked to open Karen and Garvan’s SuperValu store. Karen and Garvan have something special here, a real community store packed full of fresh local produce to inspire any budding chef. I wish them both and the store the very best for the future.

Hegarty’s SuperValu Fintona is the first store to roll out the new SuperValu NI format. SuperValu developed the format after extensive customer research on Northern Irish consumer behaviours and will open more new look stores in the coming months.

SuperValu creates 20 new jobs with the launch of home and car insurance products

SuperValu Joins Forces With AIG To Offer Discounted Rates To The Grocery Retailer’s customer base.

SuperValu, the leading Irish grocery retailer, has announced that it has created 20 new jobs after establishing a financial services division to launch home and car insurance products. The grocery retailer has joined forces with AIG to offer loyal customers discounted rates for car and home insurance following feedback from SuperValu’s 2.6 million weekly customers that it was one of a number of services they would like to see offered by the grocery retailer.

Research conducted by Red C on behalf of SuperValu showed that consumers are on the lookout to switch from their current car or home insurance provider*. 58% of car insurance and 38% of home insurance policy holders said that they were likely to switch from their current provider, underlining the potential opportunity for the grocery retailer.

SuperValu will focus on their customer base by rewarding shoppers who sign-up for home or car insurance with money off vouchers up to the value of €20** to spend in-store and also give them the opportunity to avail of a 30% multi policy discount***.

SuperValu chose to partner with AIG on the new insurance products after searching for a partner with high levels of trust and financial strength. AIG are the world’s leading general insurance organisation with a 90–year history, serving more than 40 million insurance clients in over 160 countries. The insurance company’s A+ rating ensured that SuperValu customers would have peace of mind in two brands they can trust. Both insurance products will be underwritten by AIG.

Key benefits of SuperValu’s Home Insurance product include a 20% discount if the policy holder has a monitored burglar alarm, a 24 hour Home Emergency Assist Helpline and up to €1000 in SuperValu Vouchers to replace freezer contents.

SuperValu’s Car Insurance product also offers a range of features including breakdown assist and home start as standard, as well as offering protection for possessions in a customer’s car for up to €300.

Record number of SuperValu producers shortlisted for coveted Blas na hEireann Awards

63 Food Academy and 34 SuperValu Own Brand products nominated for awards

SuperValu, the leading Irish grocery retailer, announced today that a record number of SuperValu suppliers and Food Academy producers have been shortlisted for awards at this year’s Blas na hEireann National Irish Food Awards. 63 Food Academy and 34 SuperValu Own Brand products have been nominated for these prestigious food accolades.

The record number of nominations for SuperValu suppliers recognises the unrivalled quality Irish produce being produced locally and supplied to SuperValu – a further endorsement of SuperValu as the number one supporter of the Irish agri-food industry.

The nominations also highlight the success of Food Academy participants; Food Academy is a unique training programme run by SuperValu, Bord Bia and the Local Enterprise Board, which supports and nurtures start-up food businesses. Over 200 Food Academy producers are now selling their products in SuperValu stores across Ireland.

46 Food Academy producers are shortlisted for the awards across a range of categories such as DeRoiste fresh Irish puddings, oriental tea from Lily’s Tea Shop, Nobo’s ice-cream and Patel’s authentic curries. Among the 34 SuperValu Own Brand products nominated for awards are renowned Irish suppliers such as Dunns Seafare, Kepak, Ballymaguire Foods, Couveture Desserts and Follain.
