Musgrave Marketplace celebrates 25 years in the North West

Wholesale business, Musgrave MarketPlace, based in Derry~Londonderry, is celebrating 25 years of doing business in the North West. Forty people are employed on the site which has operated from the Pennyburn Industrial Estate since 1993 and over the years has increased in size.

Emir Sheppard, General Manager, Musgrave MarketPlace, said: “We’re extremely proud to be a consistent employer in the North West region and of the service we have provided to our thousands of customers over the years.

“We have continually challenged ourselves to always achieve more, whether that’s in our product offering and value or the customer service we provide to the people with whom we do business.

“We firmly believe in bringing our staff with us on the journey and that’s why we provide NVQ and Essential Skills training as well as Breakthrough training; we want to empower our staff and show them that success starts with them.

“There are big plans for the site over the coming months which will solidify our place in the North West business community and further enhance the site and the service we are able to provide to our customers.  It’s a very exciting time for the business”, commented Emir.

Two staff members, Josie Foy and Donna Cooper, have been working at Musgrave MarketPlace since the doors first opened in 1993.

Emir continued: “It’s wonderful to see that Josie and Donna, who both started working here as checkout operators on the first day we opened, are still here.  Josie is now senior receptionist and Donna is an EPOS operator and both have witnessed many changes to the business over the years.”

Incredible success for Centra and Mace

Convenience retail brands, Centra and Mace, owned by Musgrave, are celebrating after they picked up four prestigious awards between them at a recent retail awards ceremony.

Mace Kildress in County Tyrone won Neighbourhood Store of the Year – Category 1, whilst Derry~Londonderry stores, Centra Waterloo Place picked up Neighbourhood Store of the Year – Category 2 and Centra Claudy won Best Customer Service at the Neighbourhood Retailer Awards.

Continuing a run of recent high-profile award wins, Lusty’s Centra Larne, who were named Independent Drinks Retailer of the Year at the Retail Industry Awards last month, took home the coveted title of, Off-licence of the Year.

Dungiven man crowned SuperValu SuperStar

Andrew Smith walks away with the overall SuperValu SuperStar title at awards ceremony

Andrew Smith from Dungiven has been crowned as the overall SuperValu SuperStar 2018 for his phenomenal fundraising efforts at a glittering awards ceremony in Titanic Hotel, Belfast. He also took home the Fundraising SuperStar title at the emotional ceremony, which recognised over 30 inspirational individuals from across Northern Ireland.

Hundreds of nominations were received for the SuperValu SuperStars competition.  SuperValu has been rewarding community spirit in Northern Ireland with initiatives like this, since 2014.

The grand final was hosted by TV personality, Pamela Ballantine who crowned Andrew the overall SuperValu SuperStar 2018, presenting him with a £1,000 cash prize along with a £1,000 donation to his chosen charity.

Spanning almost a decade, Andrew’s fundraising journey started in June 2009 when he hosted a barn dance to raise money for the Ulster Cancer Foundation, raising over £4,000.  The success of this initial event led him to organise a further 10 dances, booking top local artists including Mike Denver, Nathan Carter and Derek Ryan and raising almost £90,000 for a number of regional charities.

However, ill health has meant that Andrew organised his last event recently, as he explained: “My mind is willing, but my body isn’t as able as it used to be so regretfully, I have had to call it a day on these big events, but what a wonderful way to go!  Being named the SuperValu SuperStar 2018 has given me a huge boost. I was so incredibly shocked to win but absolutely delighted.”

This year’s event introduced a series of new categories, including Young SuperStar, Fundraising SuperStar, Unsung SuperStar, Community Group SuperStar, Social Enterprise SuperStar and Action Cancer SuperStar; to help capture the good work done across a whole spectrum of Northern Ireland society. Winners from each category received awards on the night and a £250 shopping voucher for SuperValu.

Brendan Morgan, aged 12 from Crossgar, won the Young SuperStar category and was also Highly Commended, receiving a prize of £500, for the care he provides to his mother. His mum, a single parent who suffers from a serious illness, nominated him as she wanted to recognise his selfless character, which is inspiring at such a young age.

Receiving the Unsung SuperStar award was Leisa Smith, a photographer from Derry~Londonderry, who donates her spare time to the Lavender Suite in Altnagelvin Hospital, where she offers her photography services to families who have lost their children at birth.

Picking up the Community Group SuperStar award was Tracy Collins from Cookstown, chairperson of Team Aspie, for her work in her local community to support young people with autism and Asperger’s. Team Aspie creates an environment that allows young people to create strong friendships, improve their mental and physical health and participate in workshops.

The Social Enterprise SuperStar award was presented to Lisburn woman, Paula Jennings, founder of Stepping Stones NI. Paula was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the development and success of the organisation, which she has led for 20 years, supporting more than 250 people with learning disabilities in Lisburn and beyond.

Finally, honoured with the Action Cancer SuperStar award was Karen Hargan, a long serving member of the SuperValu Limavady team and an outstanding fundraiser. Already this year, she has helped raise a massive £1,300 for Action Cancer, whilst her popular in-store book sale has helped SuperValu Limavady raise over £25,000 for Action Cancer.

“We realise his health means he can no longer dedicate himself to organising events in the way he used to, but we hope this award goes some way to thanking him for his hard work over the years.

“It was humbling to hear the stories of all 31 of our finalists and to shine a light on them in this way was an honour for everyone at SuperValu.”

One in three older people in Ireland live alone

SuperValu encourages more time for chat as it supports ALONE in tackling loneliness in communities this Christmas

Thursday, November 15th, 2018: Christmas can be a very lonely time for many, so SuperValu is set to help address this by supporting ALONE and raise funds to support people who are suffering from loneliness this Christmas. With statistics indicating that there will be over 300,000 people over the age of 65 living alone in Ireland by 2021, there has never been a greater need for action. SuperValu through a range of fundraising initiatives will amplify the issue of loneliness this Christmas and highlight the importance to reach out to both young and old in the community.

With SuperValu at the heart of 217 communities, this year they are asking their shoppers to Consider Taking Time to Catch up with someone in their community who may be lonely this festive season and drop around to have a chat and cuppa along with a mince pie. A 0.20c donation from all packs of Signature Taste mince pies will go to ALONE. Retailers around the country will also be hosting local coffee and mince pie mornings and wine and cheese evenings on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th of November to raise further funds and awareness for the charity.

SuperValu will also open its special All Things Considered Christmas Café on 41 South William St for two days from the 23rd – 24th November from 10am to 8pm. Bring a friend along and enjoy some festive treats, choosing from a menu of Christmas favourites from the Specially Sourced wine range, SuperValu Christmas cakes and sandwiches and Signatures Tastes meats and cheese platters with proceeds from the menu going to ALONE.

Musgrave signs the Low Carbon Pledge championed by Business in the Community Ireland.

In a ground-breaking move today, Musgrave was one of over 40 of the country’s leading companies that have made a dedicated pledge to significantly reduce their carbon emissions.

The companies, drawn from many sectors of business and industry, are to cut their carbon emissions between now and 2030. The pledge was made today at a summit organised by the Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI), the national network for sustainability. The 43 companies include retail, manufacturing, agri-food, professional services, banks, transport and ICT.

Welcoming the move, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, Richard Bruton T.D said, “The decisions we make now in tackling climate change will define the next century. I’d like to commend the 43 companies taking part in this pledge, for their leadership and foresight. We need to dramatically step up our response to climate change. By leading the way, we can take advantage of the opportunities offered in a low carbon climate resilient economy. If we fall further behind, these opportunities may become more elusive or worse be completely lost. All companies making the pledge today are leading the way and I congratulate Business in the Community Ireland for their work in this crucial area.”

Business in the Community Ireland CEO Tomás Sercovich said: “This is the first time that Irish businesses have made a dedicated pledge to reduce carbon emissions. According to the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, we have just 12 years to make a fundamental transformation to a low carbon economy so business has a vital role to play.”

Under the terms of the low carbon pledge the companies commit to reduce both Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emission intensity. Scope 1 emissions are the greenhouse gases produced directly from sources that are owned and controlled by the company, such as fuels used in vehicles, boilers and furnaces. Scope 2 emissions relate to indirect greenhouse gases from purchase of electricity.

Speaking at the pledge launch during the BITCI Breakfast Forum in Dublin today, Mr Sercovich said: “We work in partnership with business and industry to help them address climate change and play lead roles in their communities. The transition to a low carbon economy will also bring opportunities for business and will play a key role in ensuring Ireland’s future competitiveness.” “We also believe that chief executives and business leaders must be proactive in today’s world in leading from the front in tackling the major issues facing our communities, our country and our planet. Inspired leadership is what employees and consumers throughout Ireland are increasingly demanding,” he added.

Over 180 business leaders were represented at the pledge launch in the Mansion House which was a feature of BITCI’s 11th annual CEO Breakfast Forum, “The CEO as Activist.”

Addressing the sustainability challenge

We’re proud of our success in food retail. Together with our retail partners we serve about a third of the Irish population, supplying everything from daily food requirements to regional artisan specialities.

However, this is a business that makes a lot of demands on the environment. Delivering food to shops, keeping it fresh and supplying an appealing shopping environment for over a million customers can, if not managed carefully, use up a lot of energy. But we don’t want to compromise our reputation for efficiency and good service. What can we do?

In fact, we’ve been answering that question for some time. Our retail partner, and Ireland’s leading grocery retailer, SuperValu has a strong track record of introducing energy-efficient equipment to its independent stores. Energy-saving refrigeration cabinet doors and LED lighting are already making a difference to energy usage in a number of major SuperValu stores across the island of Ireland.

Of course, there is always more we can do. Which is why solar panels will be installed in up to 30 of SuperValu’s stores over the next two years – and why SuperValu is committing to the reduction of energy consumption across its estate by 20 per cent over the next two years.

These solar PV panels won’t just supply a portion of the electricity the stores need. Some of the electricity generated by the solar panels will also be used to supply energy to electric car charging points at selected stores.

These are not isolated initiatives. Solar panels and energy-efficient stores help us and our partners to reduce the environmental impact of our businesses, but we are also doing a lot more.

Our ambition is to be the most trusted and most sustainable brand in Ireland. This ambition has inspired a sustainability strategy which we call Taking care of our world. It brings together a number of environmentally friendly initiatives, like using renewable energy, reducing food waste, and cutting down on packaging. In fact it goes much further – for example, supporting local food entrepreneurs, offering healthy food promotions and working with food redistribution charities. And that’s far from all, as a quick look at our sustainability pages of our website will make clear.

This isn’t just an Irish challenge, of course; it’s a global one. In 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were published. They included guidelines on what businesses could do to make their operations more sustainable. Musgrave became one of the first companies globally to embed the UN principles in its sustainability strategy. We have, in fact, placed them at the core of our day-to-day business activities.

So, yes, we are proud of our success in Ireland’s food retail business. But we are equally proud that this success goes hand in hand with a strategy that is clearly addressing the sustainability challenge.

Service Design Award Winner 2018

1st November 2018  We are delighted to announce that Musgrave scooped the prestigious international award for experience design at the recent Service Design Network 2018 global conference. The award was given in recognition for the both the integrity and quality of the experience design process used for a recent Baby project and also the final concepts/propositions that were created for the category.

Musgrave is the first Irish company to ever have won this award and was up against companies from the States and all of Europe. It was shortlisted from 90 entries and we were delighted to accept the award at the SDN annual conference in Dublin alongside our partner service Design Agency Hellon.

The award also recognised Musgrave as being leading in the area of customer experience and service design, being one of the few companies in Ireland to successfully use this approach to deliver innovation and improved experiences for its consumers.
