Scally’s SuperValu, Clonakilty has scooped the prestigious Best Large Supermarket award at the annual Checkout ‘Best in Fresh’ awards and was a finalist in the strongly contested deli category. Scally’s award is another acknowledgement of SuperValu’s ongoing commitment to delivering an unbeatable fresh food range to customers while supporting Irish suppliers.

SuperValu is renowned for its fresh food and offers unrivalled quality which shoppers can really trust. Scally’s award recognises the retailer’s effort to source produce from local suppliers, while continuing to offer good value for money across the entire range.

The annual awards, hosted by Checkout magazine, recognise retailers for their outstanding contribution to fresh food retailing across the store. Some of Ireland’s most innovative multiples, independent stores, forecourts, deli’s and specialist outlets competed for the awards.

Presenting the award, the judges said “Scally’s SuperValu Clonakilty is simply peerless. Eugene Scally has created something very special in West Cork, and judging by the product knowledge and passion of the staff, the array of artisan products available, and the innovations this store continues to develop, it just gets better and better.”

Eugene Scally, Scally’s SuperValu said “We believe in delivering quality fresh food that shoppers can really trust. The quality of local food is second to none and this award is a real testament to our unwavering commitment to locally sourced produce. We believe in buying Irish whenever possible, and supporting local farmers and local producers. As with all SuperValu stores, we offer fully qualified butchers, fishmongers, bakers and fresh food experts in our store. We are passionate about the quality of food we offer our customers and the continuous creativity we can bring to delivering this fresh food.”

West Cork produced two more winners when Field’s SuperValu, Skibbereen were announced as winners of the ‘Most creative fresh food retailer’ award and Caulfield’s SuperValu Bandon won the ‘Most Improved Store’ award.

Fields scooped the award for its creativity and attention to detail throughout the store. The judges made particular reference to its bakery which is synonymous with Fields, along with its meat and seafood counters. They said it was a really enjoyable place to shop with its outstanding customer service, staff friendliness and local produce allowing you to sample the best of what West Cork has to offer.

Caulfield’s SuperValu, Bandon got a special mention from the judges saying, “The refurbishment of Caulfield’s SuperValu took just eight weeks to complete and with careful management it meant very little disruption to customers. However, it has brought this store forward several years in terms of how it presents and markets fresh produce. Really bright and appealing all the way through; a joy to visit on all scores.”

Stephen Wynne-Jones, Editor of Checkout Magazine congratulated the SuperValu winners saying “The culture of quality and attention to detail that SuperValu fosters in its stores is not just the finest in Ireland, but arguably exceeds that of most of Europe. In addition, the entrepreneurial spirit of its independent store owners – from Carndonagh to Castletownbere – is indicative of the efforts made by the group to achieve optimum standards, particularly when it comes to fresh.”

SuperValu serves over 2,000,000 customers every week and has 197 stores nationwide. 75% of everything on SuperValu’s shelves is sourced or produced in Ireland, contributing over €1.6 billion to the Irish economy and helping to sustain almost 30,000 Irish jobs in the farm, food and retail sector.
