Uplifts in sales of Budgens award winning own brand ice-cream

Budgens stores saw a 75 per cent uplift in ice-cream sales over the recent Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May, which includes the recently launched range of Budgens, award winning, own brand ice-cream.

Budgens continues to develop its own brand range, delivering value to the customer and strengthening the Budgens reputation and brand essence of ‘real food for today’s communities’ and combination of an increase in sales and recent silver award for Budgens toffee, fudge and pecan dairy ice-cream in The Grocer Own Label Food and Drink Awards 2010, strengthens this further.

With a focus on new, improved specifications the range is made from real, dairy ice-cream and the main ingredients are skimmed milk powder and whipping cream rather than vegetable oil, which is used in normal soft scoop ice cream. The result is a creamier product with a richer flavour, more like a traditional ice-cream.

Made by Yeo Valley, all the ingredients used are from the West Country. Vegetable oils used in some other ice-creams, however, can be from many different sources, including palm oil. The use of which is currently under scrutiny as it can only be cultivated in tropical areas of Asia, Africa and South America. This puts pressure on the environment and it’s not always possible to source sustainable palm oil. By changing the recipe for its ice-cream to a dairy base, Budgens has removed this issue.

The full ice cream range includes, six in the better tier:

  • Vanilla dairy soft scoop ice cream
  • Mint choc chip soft scoop ice cream
  • Strawberry soft scoop ice cream
  • Raspberry ripple soft scoop ice cream
  • Chocolate soft scoop ice cream
  • Cornish soft scoop ice cream

And four slightly more luxurious products in the best tier:

  • Triple chocolate dairy ice cream
  • Vanilla dairy ice cream
  • Vanilla and strawberry dairy ice cream
  • Toffee, fudge and pecan dairy ice cream
