Musgrave made direct contributions of over €1 million to community causes around Ireland in 2016, according to the latest Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) Business Impact Map, launched today. The direct involvement of Musgrave with over 150 community causes saw employees donate almost 2,600 voluntary hours, supporting vital initiatives such as the Musgrave Triathlon for Breakthrough Cancer Research, Irish Autism Action and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin, the Simon Communities of Ireland and the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer Programme.
Building vibrant local communities is at the heart of the Musgrave vision and this €1m contribution, through a combination of cash and in-kind donations, and employee fundraising, is in addition to the significant charitable contributions of Musgrave’s independent retail partners around the country. For example, SuperValu retailers alone invest in the region of €2.8 million annually on charitable contributions to worthy causes such as St. Vincent de Paul, the Lions Club and regional hospices. Similarly, Centra retailers worked with the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer programme in hosting 200 pink walks each year for the cause, raising funds and helping to promote healthy living. These monetary contributions are supplemented by numerous in-store initiatives such as autism-friendly evenings and dementia-friendly programmes.
Commenting on the launch of the BITCI Business Impact Map, John Curran, Head of Sustainability at Musgrave Group said, “As one of Ireland’s oldest family businesses, commitment to sustainability has been a guiding force throughout our 140-year history. At Musgrave we recognise that we have the opportunity to drive positive change in communities across Ireland and the BITCI Business Impact Map is reflective of our efforts in this regard. Working with our local retail partners, we are committed to enhancing the communities in which we operate, through a powerful combination of employment, local sourcing and charitable contributions.”
Musgrave has been pioneering ambitious sustainability initiatives since the early 1990s and first received the Business Working Responsibly Mark from BITCI in 2014. Founded in 2000, BITCI is the network for responsible business in Ireland and the Business Impact Map, first launched in 2010, is intended to communicate and showcase what member companies are doing for their local communities across the country.
