Chris Martin, CEO Musgrave Group addressed the Institute of Directors’ Autumn Lunch on Thursday 25th September on the subject of Food Leadership – the role of the indigenous grocery retail sector in supporting Ireland’s reputation as a world class centre for food and food innovation.
Speaking on the importance of the agri-food industry to Ireland’s economy, he said,
“The hard work of the last few years is really bearing fruit. The economic indicators and commentary on Ireland are much more positive. Only on Monday we had the headline in the FT: ‘the Irish economic recovery a shining light for others’. This narrative drives well founded optimism and resonates well, especially when you speak to people looking in from abroad. In the UK food accounts for 1 in 7 of all jobs. When we do the same sums for Ireland and look at the entire food chain we come to a figure of one in every six jobs. The food chain also accounts for more SME’s than any other sector.”
