Keeping Ireland tidy

A clean, well-cared for town makes people feel good about where they live and helps build vibrant communities. It’s in this spirit that the SuperValu TidyTowns competition is going from strength to strength.

This year Letterkenny, Co Donegal won the coveted award, beating tough competition from over 860 towns and villages throughout the country. Clonegal, Co Carlow won Ireland’s Tidiest Village, Listowel, Co Kerry claimed the prize for Tidiest Small Town and Westport, Co Mayo was named Tidiest Large Town. Letterkenny also won overall prize for Tidiest Large Urban Centre. Mr Alan Kelly, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government joined Martin Kelleher, SuperValu Managing Director to give out the prizes. Minister Kelly said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Letterkenny; a real worthy winner. Letterkenny has entered the competition every year since 1959 and their win today is testament to them consistently achieving high standards in the competition at local and regional level.”

SuperValu has sponsored this competition since 1992. The competition’s ethos is about bringing communities together and recognising the dedication of volunteers who work hard for their towns and villages. If you’d like to get involved visit to see how you can help your community shine!
