Irish convenience retail stars on an international stage

Convenience retail faces both a challenge and an opportunity in the present economic climate. The challenge is the same as for everyone else: to keep or even grow market share when consumers are watching their cents more than ever. The opportunity is that many consumers will prefer to shop as the need arises to avoid overspending; convenience stores are well positioned to allow that.

But convenience retailing also means so much more than quick, easy shop: it means being innovative, organized, reasonably priced, reliable and offering great service. That, we firmly believe, is why Murphy’s Centra in Rochestown, Cork was honoured over so many other convenience stories on the world stage at the Insight NACS International Convenience Retailer of the Year Award 2012.

Insight is an international retail strategy, research, events and publishing business. And yes, that word is international. These are global awards highlighting excellence in convenience retailing and taking into account range, layout, customer service, people development, corporate social responsibility, technology and results. Centra Rochestown majors on all of those and notably on community involvement as both a shopping facility and a supporter of local producers, community initiatives and sports.

Many of its Irish peers are very aware that Centra Rochestown has understood both the challenge and the opportunity facing modern convenience retail. We’re thrilled that its efforts have also been recognised on an international stage.
