This is the second time that Glaslough has been awarded Ireland’s Tidiest Town, which is a remarkable achievement and shows that the commitment and enthusiasm of the TidyTowns committees continues to remain strong.

I want to congratulate Glaslough and all of the other deserving prize-winners announced today. The work of all those involved in the TidyTowns effort results in the attractive and welcoming towns and villages we see all over the country, and from which we all benefit. It is this passion and pride that has made our towns and villages not only attractive and welcoming for visitors, but have created a ‘sense of place’ for those who live, work and raise families there. That is why this competition has continued to flourish for more than 60 years.

Minister Ring also announced a special allocation of €1.4 million to support the work of individual TidyTowns Committees around the country to assist them in their continued efforts to enhance their towns and villages. This is the third year in a row that Minister Ring has allocated this funding to support the work of the TidyTowns Committees.

The Minister said: “I am delighted to be able to announce that I am making available €1.4 million in order to directly support the TidyTowns committees who work so tirelessly to bring out the best in their towns and villages. All of the towns and villages involved in the competition across the country should benefit from this investment. Wherever you have active Tidy Towns committees, it gives the town a real sense of pride and engagement, and creates a great atmosphere for both residents and visitors alike.”

The Minister also thanked SuperValu, the competition’s sponsor. He said: “I want to pay tribute to SuperValu, who are now in their 28th year as sponsor and who continue to work with us to grow the competition. It is getting stronger every year with increased participation, an increased number of awards and a notable increase in the efforts of the communities involved.

SuperValu have shown fantastic support for the competition, not only through their financial sponsorship but also through the support provided to local TidyTowns groups by their network of local retailers.”

“I would also like to congratulate the category winners who all made an outstanding effort to make their communities better places to live and work in. The immense pride in where you’re from shines through every part of what you have achieved to reach these high standards.

“Since SuperValu started sponsoring TidyTowns almost 30 years ago, the competition has steadily grown from its initial focus on making our villages and towns neat and tidy, to the present day, where it is now the greatest sustainability initiative in Ireland.

“2019 was another landmark year for the SuperValu TidyTowns competition. The competition tagline, ‘Caring for our Environment’, underlines our shared commitment to having a positive impact on our surroundings. This year it has inspired thousands of passionate volunteers and a record number of 918 TidyTowns committees to deliver a range of extraordinary projects across the country.

“SuperValu shares this desire to build sustainable communities and the SuperValu TidyTowns competition is one of the best ways for us to achieve this. We are delighted to have been involved in the competition for the past 28 years and we look forward to SuperValu TidyTowns reaching 1,000 committees.”

Making Cork more accessible

Musgrave recently partnered with Access Earth to run a Volunteer Mapping Event on the afternoon of the 14th of June 2019 where colleagues, from the Airport Road office Cork, worked in pairs to rate various business places around Cork city on their accessibility using the Access Earth App.

Access Earth is the world’s first business and travel site for people living with disabilities (‘the TripAdvisor for people living with disabilities and their caregivers’). It was founded by Matt McCann – Matt has cerebral palsy and has struggled with accessibility challenges.

Access Earth is founded on three main principles – know more, do more, live more. They believe that they can open the world to this community by providing and crowdsourcing the most critical information to access restaurants, hotels and attractions (Know More). By providing this information, it will give those in the community the opportunity to go out and experience new things (Do More). With access to this information, they aim to inspire and encourage their community to find joy in life in spite of their challenges (Live More).

Over the course of an afternoon, colleagues rated 605 places.

Musgrave to ‘redefine convenience’ in Northern Ireland with ambitious expansion plans

Owners of SuperValu, Centra, MACE and MarketPlace announce £28million investment, with plans to open up to 20 new stores, creating around 550 jobs

Leading grocery and convenience retailer, Musgrave NI, which owns the SuperValu, Centra, MACE and MarketPlace brands, has announced ambitious plans to open up to 20 new stores in Northern Ireland in 2019, creating around 500 new jobs and revamping an additional 40 stores, as part of a significant £28 million investment.

The ambitious growth strategy is part of Musgrave NI’s vision to ‘redefine convenience’ through the creation of refreshed, inviting, modern stores that challenge the status quo.

The platform for growth for Musgrave NI is built upon an incredibly positive performance in Musgrave Group. Within the Group, turnover grew by almost 4% to €3.9bn last year, with pre-tax profits rising 5.6% to €84.5m. Across the island of Ireland, SuperValu grew sales last year by 1.5% to €2.9bn, with Centra growing 4% to €1.9bn. In Northern Ireland, SuperValu, Centra, MACE and MarketPlace delivered significant growth in 2018, with positive year on year sales growth across all brands.

Commenting on the announcement, Michael McCormack, Managing Director of Musgrave NI said:

“These results provide a solid platform for us to grow our presence in the NI market and we very much leverage our Group strength when it comes to buying, tapping into expertise and adapting concepts that we see working across our business.

“While 2018 was a good year, we know we can’t stand still. Our plans are ambitious but achievable. For us, this is all about how we’ll realise our vision to ‘redefine convenience’ in Northern Ireland.’

“We have been working towards achieving this vision across our SuperValu, Centra and MACE brands; focusing on what matters to our shoppers – bringing healthier, restaurant quality food to convenience and continuously innovating across all aspects of convenience.”

Over the last two years, artisan on-the-go coffee brand, Frank and Honest has been introduced to 110 SuperValu, Centra and Mace stores across Northern Ireland. With over 700 Frank and Honest locations across the island of Ireland, Frank and Honest is now the largest on-the-go coffee brand on the island.

New food concepts including Green Kitchen – a freshly prepared standalone salad bar – has grown significantly, off the back of consumer demand for fresher, healthier options from consumers. The company has also seen success in of its new XO Donuts brand, which it launched in 2018. To date, in excess of 40,000 donuts have been sold.

The 20 new store openings will be made up of a mix of brand new store developments and acquisitions, as Musgrave seeks to convert retailers and buy new sites.

Michael added: “Our aim to redefine convenience is underpinned by our ability to grow our estate across the SuperValu, Centra and MACE brands. That’s why we’ve been extremely active in the market – we’re opening brand new stores – as we’ve done with the recent opening of Gracey’s Centra City Quays, Belfast and in Mallusk, where we are building a new Centra store this year.

“First and foremost, we want to work with the best independent retailers and grow business together. However, as we seek to grow and offer our existing retailers the benefits of scale, we are looking at converting retailers and saying to those that are thinking of selling their business, freehold or leasehold – that we are very much open for business.”

Revamping existing stores within its estate is also a core part of Musgrave’s ongoing investment and growth strategy. Retailers that have completed refresh programmes are demonstrating robust sales growth. There’s an impressive pipeline of recent refreshes – more than 80 in recent years – including Lilley’s Centra at Dublin Road, Enniskillen, Moran’s Centra Strand Road, Derry-Londonderry, Watson’s Centra Cloughey, SuperValu Comber and SuperValu Kings Road. The next refurbishment will take place at SuperValu Lisburn.

Looking to 2019, the Musgrave NI brands will tap into a number of consumer trends and the merging of retail and foodservice to achieve further growth, bringing more new concepts to the Northern Ireland market.

One of those new concepts is Caramico pizza, a concept using authentic pizza ovens to offer a freshly made pizza in-store. It has been rolled out successfully by Musgrave in the Republic of Ireland, driven by a high-quality product that surpasses other established pizza brands. Key to the concept is a ‘for now’ and ‘for later’ offering for consumers. A rotisserie style chicken concept will also be rolled out following successful trials.

Last year, Musgrave celebrated 35 years in business in Northern Ireland, is a committed local employer of over 5,000 people across its business along with a dedicated partner of almost 130 retail families within the province.

World Food Safety Day

Today, Friday 7th June 2019 has been designated as the first World Food Safety Day by the United Nations General Assembly.

The theme for the day is ‘Food Safety, everyone’s business’.

There are currently 600 million cases of foodborne illness around the world every year (1 in 10) with children under the age of 5 years of age being 50% of all cases are representing over 125,000 deaths annually. The World Food Safety Day is a tangible signal by the World Health Organisation to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne disease globally.

Ray Bowe, Head of Food Safety and Quality, said: “Musgrave is supporting World Food Safety Day through various channels of communication with our retailers, consumers and internal colleagues in addition to collaborating with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and Safefood. Musgrave remains committed to the highest standards of food safety throughout the supply chain and our teams work to continuously improve standards.”

SuperValu celebrates 10 years as GAA partner

SuperValu, Ireland’s leading retailer with over 220 stores nationwide, launched their 10th year as sponsor of the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship.

Joined by their GAA ambassadors – Dublin’s Bernard Brogan, Mayo’s Andy Moran, Galway’s Damien Comer, Cork Captain Doireann O’Sullivan and former Cork star Valerie Mulcahy – SuperValu revealed that they will contribute over €2.6 million to the GAA and GAA Clubs across the country, this year. Throughout their 10 years as GAA sponsor, SuperValu has contributed over €18 million to aid the development of our national sport.

Speaking about the launch, Ray Kelly, SuperValu Marketing Director, said: “Our partnership with the GAA has been a fantastic fit for SuperValu, over the past 10 years. From GAA to Tidy Towns, SuperValu prides itself on being a valued member of every community in which we operate. Our GAA partnership has allowed us to support the development of the game – from where it all begins at grassroots level in towns and communities across Ireland, to players who represent their parish and county. We are very proud to have been on this journey for the past decade and we look forward to continuing our support.”

As part of their sponsorship activity this Championship season, SuperValu will work with its ambassadors and the GAA community, to explore what it is that makes GAA so unique. The importance of “Where you’re from” and the passion it generates through both players and fans will be explored through SuperValu’s 2019 GAA campaign. The new campaign is sure to turn heads as it takes a look behind the scenes to highlight the real resilience of players, managers and supporters – what really keeps them coming back and on the pitch.  SuperValu will demonstrate how our communities and our involvement in GAA, helps to shape the people and players we become – how community is paramount, how community pride never leaves us and how where you’re from is truly engrained in our personal identities.

Also, to celebrate their sponsorship milestone, SuperValu announced the ‘SuperValu Community Pitch’ initiative. Open to all GAA clubs from August, ‘SuperValu Community Pitch’ is a bursary, set up to assist clubs with essential maintenance works, or facilities upgrades. Whether its upgrading changing rooms, investing in new lighting or purchasing a long-overdue piece of grounds-keeping equipment SuperValu wants to hear from clubs who need a helping hand.

“GAA and GAA clubs are such an integral part of our communities and our national identity. As we constantly strive to be champions of our communities, we are thrilled to introduce our ‘Community Pitch’ initiative. Club members and volunteers do such fantastic fundraising work, to improve their clubs and facilities but it’s hard to keep knocking on the same doors. With the introduction of this initiative, we will be able to help make a real difference by assisting some of those clubs with their maintenance works and upgrade plans,” Ray Kelly added.

The new store will open to the public on Tuesday 28th May.

Centra will be the first convenience store to open in the City Quays / Clarendon Dock area, which is currently home to over 5,000 workers. City Quays will eventually provide jobs and homes for 13,000, with City Quays 2 accommodating 1,000 workers.

Spanning 2,615sq ft, the bright and contemporary new store marries high convenience with an expanded food-to-go offering. Amenities in store include Frank & Honest Coffee – the largest gourmet coffee brand on the island of Ireland; a Green Kitchen hot and cold deli, with a plentiful choice of healthy sandwich and salad options, a Mex-a-go Burrito Bar, hot self-serve food-to-go options and self-scanning checkouts. Boasting strong eco-credentials, all Frank and Honest coffee cups and food-to-go packaging will be 100% compostable.

For an enhanced shopping experience, Centra City Quays also features a seating area and complimentary Wi-Fi, providing customers with a dedicated space to dine-in and take a break. The unit will also include a covered terrace for waterfront dining and direct access to the river Lagan walk and cycleway that connects City Quays to Belfast’s Waterfront Hall.

The store is the latest addition to the Gracey family’s portfolio, which also includes two MACE stores at Newtown Park and The Gasworks. Next week’s opening builds on the family’s estate, which was established by leading retailer, Tony Gracey over two decades ago. Today, his daughter Anna and son Stephen are at the helm of this latest addition to the family business.

Commenting ahead of the opening, Anna McErlean said: “Our business was founded by our father Tony Gracey 22 years ago. At one point, he had 10 stores, before deciding to consolidate the business in 2010 to two stores – Mace Newton Park and Mace Gasworks.

“I joined the business around seven years ago; I had just completed my law degree at Queen’s University and thought it would be a good opportunity for me to learn that side of the business before deciding my career path – I never left. My brother Stephen joined the business in 2018 after four years working in retail business development. Our passion for the business and customer-centric approach has at the heart of our recent successful refit of our Gasworks store and the opening of our new store at City Quays.

“Our father Tony has decided to take more of a back seat, with Stephen and I now at the forefront of the business today. Together we are proud to mark another milestone as we open our new Centra store at City Quays, bringing significant investment to the local area. We are proud of our roots in the Belfast retail space and are proud to bring further employment to the city.”

Nigel Maxwell, Centra Sales Director added: “We are delighted to support the Gracey family in this exciting new venture, which brings significant investment to Belfast. One of our core objectives is to work with our retailers with a joint aim to redefine convenience for the consumer. The new Centra City Quays store does just this; bringing an exciting and fresh retail concept to the area that will be matched by the first-class customer service synonymous with the Gracey family name.”

“We are confident that our new look Centra stores offer customers an enhanced shopping experience, where they can get value for money, without compromising on quality. We are sure this new look store will be a great addition to City Quays, which features a vibrant business and residential community.”

Graeme Johnston, Belfast Harbour’s Property Director, said: “With over 5,000 workers already based in the area, further offices underway and the Marriott hotel now open, this is a significant opportunity for Centra.

“As part of the procurement process to secure a retailer we surveyed existing workers in City Quays. They wanted access to a wide range of quality, fresh produce that supported healthier lifestyles – Centra’s modern take on convenience and coffee was a perfect fit.

“City Quays has already become a natural extension of the City Centre.  With the waterfront walkway and attractions such as the Marriott hotel and now Centra, we expect even greater numbers of people to visit and enjoy this new part of Belfast.”

Centra to champion the importance of hurling to Irish community life

Tuesday May 21st, 2019: The GAA All Ireland Hurling Championship occupies a unique place in Irish Sport and the first two weeks of the Championship have reminded us why anticipation is building in communities right around Ireland on what lies in store for their county team. Centra has teamed up with Clare’s Podge Collins, Galway’s Niall Burke, Cork manager John Meyler and Dublin’s Cliodhna O’Connor, to reveal their passions on and off the pitch.

Centra, Ireland’s leading convenience retail group with more than 460 stores nationwide, understands the unique pride and passion reserved for our national sport, hurling. Located at the heart of communities nationwide, Centra celebrates its association with the GAA All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship through its #WeAreHurling campaign. The campaign seeks to recognise and celebrate the individuals within those communities be it players, supporters, coaches, parents and in many cases its own Centra local retailers that help make hurling great.

Over the course of the GAA All Ireland Hurling Championship, Centra will seek to get behind the helmet of their GAA ambassadors who are some of Ireland’s best-known hurlers and their support teams to unearth what it is that not only drives their passion for the sport, but also their passions off the pitch.  Centra will share the stories of what it means to the ambassadors to represent their communities on hurling’s biggest stage.  In doing so, Centra will explore the emotion generated by the GAA All Ireland Hurling Championships beyond just the players and the teams, but into communities right around Ireland – and the unique connection felt by many to the GAA no matter the extent or type of their involvement.

Ray Kelly, Marketing Director with Centra, emphasised the importance of Centra’s partnership with the GAA. “Centra is very proud to be entering our tenth year as sponsors of the GAA All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Our partnership with the GAA is a natural fit given the role we play in over 460 communities across the country, communities in which the GAA plays a hugely significant role with many of Centra’s retailers playing a pivotal role in providing support to their local GAA clubs. We both believe in the power of community and the important role we play in improving the everyday lives of people within those communities right across Ireland. We are excited that our campaign this summer will further explore our #WeAreHurling platform and we will help sports fans to get a deeper understanding of the players and support teams by revealing what is behind the helmet and sharing their stories.”

Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, John Horan said: “The GAA partnership with Centra is a natural fit. Particularly, our shared presence at the heart of communities right around Ireland. Centra’s #WeAreHurling is a celebration of the power of community and the potential of what can be achieved when people come together.

“The Centra campaign brings to life the nature of the GAA as an organisation, in particular the reliance on the goodwill and volunteerism of people right around Ireland at all levels of the game. Ultimately, this prepares and supports players and coaches to represent their local communities at the pinnacle of the sport, the GAA All Ireland Hurling Championship. We have no doubt that a great summer of hurling lies in store and we are delighted to be working in partnership with Centra to highlight the positive impact of the Championship on communities right around Ireland.”
