5.5 million Euro SuperValu store opens in Mountmellick, creating 70 new jobs

Earlier today, SuperValu announced the opening of a new store at Mountmellick, County Laois. The 1,486 square metre store, cost €5.5 million to develop and has created 70 new jobs within the local community. The new store is owned and operated by local businessman and SuperValu retailer Mr. Emmett McConville.

McConville’s SuperValu will have a strong emphasis on supporting Irish suppliers and stocking Irish-made produce, with 75% of all goods available in the store either produced or sourced in Ireland. Additionally, the store will sell only 100% Irish meat and poultry, which has been born, bred and reared in Ireland.

As is the case with every SuperValu nationwide, a strong customer value offer will be at the centre of the stores offering. However, its focus will also be on the delivery of excellent customer service and an offer that is different and better to its competition.

The store boasts a superb fresh food offering, which includes an expert butchery department, an excellent fresh fruit and vegetable selection and a range of exclusive breads from its own in-store bakery department. A full off-licence also offers a wide range of world wines, beers and spirits at keen prices, while customers can also avail of the free home delivery service.

Earlier this year, SuperValu and its retail partners announced a €25 million expansion programme, which was aimed at adding 400 new jobs to its 15,000 strong nationwide workforce.  The new store in Mountmellick is a key part of this investment programme.

Speaking at the official opening, Emmett McConville said, “I am delighted to be opening the store today, as you can imagine it represents a significant amount of work by my team here in Mountmellick and at SuperValu HQ. The store represents a significant investment in Mountmellick and I look forward to trading here for many years to come and to the store becoming an integral part of the local community. The store will excel through its fresh food, a consistent keen value offer, relationships with local suppliers and the expertise and customer service of the management and staff and we look forward to welcoming the people of Mountmellick through our front door.

Said Martin Kelleher, Managing Director, SuperValu: “Core to the SuperValu ethos, is supporting local entrepreneurs in every county in Ireland to own, operate and run their stores – a policy that helps keep our regional towns vibrant and successful. Earlier this year, SuperValu committed to expanding its network to bring our excellent value offering to even more locations nationwide and I am delighted to be here today to see Emmett open this new store. Emmet has made a crucial investment in the local economy with both the direct and indirect employment the store has created. Everyone at SuperValu wishes him and his family the very best for what we know will be a very successful enterprise here in Mountmellick.

The store, which is located on Davitt Road/Connolly Street, is the site of the former textiles factory, and it anchors a new town centre development which includes office units, a HSE primary health care centre, apartments, a GP surgery and 5 retail units including a Chemist and a Cafés, as well as offering parking for 200 cars. The store will open from 8am-9pm Monday to Saturday and 8am–8pm on Sunday and Bank Holidays, while in-store ATM facilities will also be available.
