Ireland’s top female presenters, Sinead Desmond (TV3), Debbie Allen (Q102), Ruth Scott (RTE 2FM) and Orla Barry (Newstalk 106 108)) have joined forces with Centra to launch its pink beanie hats for Action Breast Cancer this October. The country’s high profile media personalities are encouraging women all over Ireland to purchase a pink beanie hat from Centra stores nationwide from October 3rd for only €5. All proceeds from the sale of the stylish beanie hats go to Action Breast Cancer.
The stylish hats will be available in both adult and children sizes and are designed with the highest quality wool. Centra’s Pink Beanies will be ‘a must’ have item for your winter wardrobe. The initiative follows on from the hugely successful pink mitten campaign last year, which saw Centra raise an astonishing €400,000 for Action Breast Cancer from the sale of mittens across its store network.
Newstalk 106 108’s presenter, Orla Barry who’s mother battled breast cancer, commented on the launch of the campaign “This is such an important campaign as so many women have been affected by breast cancer. Awareness and early detection are the first key steps to combat the disease but we also need to continue to fundraise to ensure help is available for women and their familes throughout the cancer journey.”
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Ireland. Every year more than 2500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer throughout the country. The latest data available from the National Cancer Registry of Ireland shows that 2,766 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2009 (women have a 1 in 9 chance of developing breast cancer). The latest data from the CSO shows that there were 739 deaths from breast cancer in 2008.
