Local provenance
Our relationships with local suppliers have helped raise the standard of community shopping.
While our top priority is to make sure our retail partners can deliver freshness and the best possible value to their customers, we’ve always tried to do this by supporting local businesses that help drive employment and build vibrant sustainable communities.
75 per cent of all SuperValu and Centra products are either sourced or produced in Ireland. This commitment to community enterprise helps support 14,000 jobs across 600 supplier companies and contributes €2.9 billion to the Irish economy.
In fact in Ireland alone we support more than 1,000 local businesses which in turn serve to create and protect in excess of 30,000 jobs in the Irish farm, food and retail sectors.
Supplier development
Our Supplier Development programme is about taking small suppliers with big ambitions and nurturing them into thriving enterprises built on sound business principles.
It's good news for suppliers, good news for the consumer and, perhaps more important these days, good news for local economies.
The six-month long programme consists of a combination of workshops, delivered by both SuperValu and food industry experts, and one-to-one mentoring. The idea is to help participating companies fully understand the workings of the retail sector and the best approach required to secure a listing with a major brand like SuperValu.
The Supplier Development programme is just another expression of our commitment to local enterprise and to date participants have recorded a collective €12 million in direct sales to SuperValu.
Own brand integrity
The development of own brand has become increasingly important to both consumers and our retail partners.
We have been working with our very best suppliers to ensure the kind of quality, value for money and depth of range that are an important part of encouraging footfall, sales and loyalty.
In Ireland, Centra lead the field in the convenience market, responding to consumer needs with over 600 lines of quality own brand that offer savings of at least 20 per cent on equivalent brand products.
With Budgens and Londis in Great Britain, we continue to extend the scale, quality and choice of our 600-plus own brand lines with additional strong offerings in meat, bread and wine.
Improved range
Understanding what consumers want, stocking the range that meets their needs and having it available every time they shop – these are the basic requirements of any retail offer.
This is why we're working with our suppliers to improve the availability of the core range associated with each of our brands. These are the products consumers tell us they expect to see whether they’re visiting a SuperValu in Donegal or Kerry, or a Budgens in York or Exmouth. And this drive for consistency means consumers get what they want 24/7 and our retail partners and suppliers get to sell more.
At the same time, we are constantly evolving our offer to meet the changing needs of shoppers. This means, for example, being responsive to the growing number of shoppers choosing to cook from scratch by inspiring them and making it easier for them to shop more frequently from the best possible choice of fresh products.
