Latest news from our business and brands

Malcolm Tice closed his shop at the beginning of January and traded out of a portacabin for five weeks before reopening the doors as a Budgens.

To celebrate the opening, Mayor of Wimborne Cllr Terry Wheeler was on site with his wife, some of the 17 employees and customers eager to see some of the great offers available in store. And it was a day of celebrations for local residents too, with the first 100 customers receiving a free bottle of wine, and the next 500 bagging a bag for life.

The shop distributed 9,000 leaflets to publicise the opening with great money off vouchers – £4 off a £20 spend in the first week followed by another offer of £5 off a £40 spend.

Talking about the opening Malcolm said: “Working with Budgens has exceeded my expectations, it really is a partnership. It’s still early days but we’re delighted with our new store, but more importantly so are our customers.”

As with all Budgens stores, there is a strong fresh offering in the new-look store, which consists of 3.75m fresh produce, 3m frozen, 7.5m chilled drinks, 1.2m fresh meat and 10m dairy. With a focus on offering ‘real food for today’s communities’, fresh food accounted for 32 per cent of the store’s turnover in the first week.

All of the store’s refrigeration units have doors that close – which makes them very energy efficient – with door stickers to keep doors shut that display key messages around energy savings.

The popular garage has occupied this prominent corner site since 1963 and the £160,000 development has seen the forecourt store more than double in size to 2,300 sq metres.

The store also boasts Food to Go, fresh bread baked on site, flowers and fresh eggs from a local supplier.

Trading has been brisk in the first couple of weeks and the store has set its sights on hitting sales of £30,000 per week.

The new Budgens store is open seven days a weeks from 7am to 10pm, with improved free parking bays for shoppers.
